The town was founded by farmers in 1716 who named their new hometown after a river near their farmstead. The name “Woonsocket” comes from the word “woon” which means to pluck or pick up something, and “skwit” which means a mill stream. The first settler in Woonsocket was Nicholas Wright who arrived in 1716. He built a small cabin on the banks of the Skitchey River. Agriculture was the mainstay of life in early Woonsocket and many residents raised chickens, ducks, pigs, horses, and cows. In 1812, John Quincy Adams became President of the United States and decided to move his Presidential mansion from Philadelphia to Washington D.C.. However, he didn’t want his family to live close to Washington so he ordered his son-in-law Jefferson Davis to purchase 4 square miles (10 km2) of land at Pawtucket Point on Narragansett Bay for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). Davis used this land as part of his presidential plantation known as Richmond Plantation. When Davis died in 1828, his son Lafayette inherited Richmond Plantation and moved it from Pawtucket Point to nearby West Warwick where he established himself as an American politician and Ulysses S. Grant's mentor. After Grant's death in 1885, Richmond Plantation passed back into private hands until it was acquired by Providence College in 1903 who used it for college purposes until 1969 when it reverted back into public ownership again under Providence College management once again through 2006 when it finally fell victim to natural disasters such as Hurricane Irene which destroyed much of its infrastructure including its millstream dam allowing salt water access inside.) The early days were tough for Woonsocket because there wasn’t much money available for development so people had to make do with what they had. The first European to set foot in what is now Woonsocket was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1638, the English built a wharf there and named it after their Admiral Sir Edward Yeo's property on Warwick River. The early settlers were Quakers who fled religious persecution in England. They erected Meetinghouses and other buildings here that still stand today including: Friends Meeting House (1638), Congregational Church (1712), and Baptist Church (1858). In 1768, when Woonsocket became a town under Rhode Island statehood, its founders chose "Woonsocket" as their name for their new community because they thought it would be more popular than any other local namesakes proposed by others in the town. By 1800, most of what is now Woonsocket had been established with shops and services being provided by two stores - one from Samuel Slater and another from Nicholas Truman - both men from nearby Narragansett Village. While growth continued at a steady pace throughout the 19th century, something that never happened in neighboring Providence was an increase in population density due to transportation issues – until quite recently!
