Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 3,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of Providence metropolitan area. Woonsocket was founded on October 13, 1795 by Loyalists from England as Westford Township. The town name comes from the Potomac River and its namesake river's meadow near the site of present-day Woonsocket. The town was chartered on October 13, 1795 by George Washington as Westford Township with a population of 25 people. On November 1, 1796, Washington changed Westford Township to Woonsocket Borough and granted it to John Cushing who had come overland from Rhode Island in September of that year with his family and slaves under his command. He soon became one of the most influential men in the community and helped to build many homes and businesses in what is now Woonsocket. In 1812, Cushing sold all his land within Woonsocket bounds to Elijah Porter for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest per annum until he died without heirs or title thereto; however this gift did not settle any claims between the townsfolk over boundaries which still remain today. In 1825–1826 Elisha Goodrich built a sawmill on Narragansett Bay side of what is now Main Street in Woonsocket after coming downriver from Narragansett Bayou (now called Tuscarora Creek) during what is known as "The Great Flood". This mill continued operation until about 1850 when it burned down due to arson by some residents who thought it would create an obstruction to navigation on Narragansett Bayou. The mill remains standing but has been destroyed several times by fire over the years including once in 1916 which completely destroyed the building ruins). During World War I (1914-1918), Headquarters for American Forces Europe were located at 9 White Street in Woonsocket where they processed food supplies arriving through New York City ports such as Newport News (the largest port ever served by American forces) and Elizabethport before being shipped out across America via sea into Germany and Belgium; accordingly many local women contributed their time & skills cooking troops' meals ashore while others provided general office support tasks such as typing up reports or handling correspondence etc... One woman even cooked breakfast for every US soldier deployed! As war progressed shortages developed along with rationing soensen made do with whatever they could find lying around... later regulations forced most local eateries closed either because they were unable to get enough food or because rationed goods became too expensive.. finally following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor ( December 7th 1941), all Naval stores were requisitioned & these foods led to widespread famine among troops stationed nearby causing some soldiers even mutilate their genitals in protest! However despite these difficulties life went back slowly 'normal' again until 1948 when electric lights arrived followed shortly thereafter by water service... during those early daysonyelights precededavailablethesurfaceofthedRockswhichwerethenallowingtobloomandgrowancestorshewithouthelpfrom hometownsmen!. After WW2 ended things quickly reversed themselves with increased demand for services no longer available locally so much so that starting in 1946 almost all new housing construction began underground thereby minimizing disturbance/damage caused during reclamation projects associated with changing demographics & development patterns throughout Providence metropolitan area)... post-war growth spurt brought more businesses&housing ontothestreetsofWoonsexton parallelingrestructuringoflocal government(providence Metropolitan Area) culminatinginthe formingofProvidence County ON December 15th 1959!
Woonsocket was an early English town on the island of Rhode Island. It was founded in 1638 by General William Dawes as part of a campaign to take over the land from the Narragansetts. The first permanent settler in Woonsocket was John Carpenter, who arrived in 1639. By 1644, Woonsocket had a population of about 150 people. In 1780, Woonsocket became part of the United States and was renamed Providence.
