The town became an important center for gunmaking in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Woonsocket’s arsenal produced many famous firearms, including the Winfield rifle and the British Model 1841 horse-rifle. Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a small town located in the state of Rhode Island. The community was first settled in 1638 by Captain John Smith and his party on the present-day site of Woonsocket. The original name of the town was Narragansett. In 1692, the town was renamed Woonsocket after Sir Nicholas Woosley, 1st Baronet, who had donated land to the town. The first post office in Woonsocket opened in 1753. In 1836, a new courthouse and jail were built for the town. In 1912, a water tower and pumping station were constructed to provide drinking water for the town. Today, Woonsocket is considered an important cultural center for its residents and businesses.
Woonsocket was a town in Rhode Island from 1647 to 1853. The population was 1,898 at the time of its incorporation as a town. Woonsocket's first settler, John Quiney, arrived in 1647 and soon began trading with the neighboring towns of Narragansett and Cranston. In 1651, Woonsocket entered into an agreement with Providence to jointly build a fortification against attacks by the French and Indian War veterans seeking revenge for their losses at Fort Duquesne. The fort was not completed until 1657. In 1720, Woonsocket became part of Fishing River Parish when that parish was created from parts of Newport, Warwick, Pawtucket and other towns in Rhode Island. When the parish boundaries were changed in 1738, part of Woonsocket went to North Kingstown and part to South Kingstown. In 1779-80, during the American Revolution, Henry Knox proposed creation of a new state called Rhode Island but this proposal was defeated by the General Assembly. The first school in what is now Woonsocket opened on July 21st, 1800 thanks to Reverend Drury Pemberton who started it on Salisbury Road south of present day Park Street. A second school opened on October 6th 1830 led by Rev Gouverneur Morris followed by one each for Westbury (1832), East Greenwich (1836) and North Kingstown (1839). On November 5th 1840 local citizens met at Meeting House No 2 along Center street corner near today's State Armory field to select trustees for what would become Brown University which then moved from Hanover Square into Amherst Street between Market Street & Broadwalk Avenue On January 13th 1851 local citizens voted 3-2 in favor of becoming independent as a town under the name "Woonsocket". On May 4th 1853 the Town Council voted unanimously to rename themselves "Rhode Island" after President James Kappenstall who had come through Providence on an official visit
