In the early 1800s, Woonsocket was a thriving port town on the Narragansett Bay. The town was founded by English settlers in 1638 and quickly became one of the most popular ports in Rhode Island. In 1824, Woonsocket became the capital of Rhode Island and began to grow rapidly. By 1830, the population had reached over 10,000 people and by 1840, it had nearly doubled that number. The rapid growth of Woonsocket led to an increase in gun-related violence. In 1831, for example, a group of men armed with pistols tried to rob a store owner in Woonsocket. The store owner fought back and killed several of the attackers before escaping into hiding. This type of violence continued throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century; during this time period, guns were often used to commit robberies and other crimes. In 1896, however, something changed in Woonsocket when Mayor George Brown enacted a new gun bill which made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to own or possess any firearms without first obtaining a government license. This law effectively ended gun-based crime in Woonsocket for many years to come. Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 10,513 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Rhode Island, and one of its two towns. Woonsocket's namesake comes from the Dutch word "woon" meaning house or seat, and "sockets" because of its small size relative to other towns in the state. The first Europeans to reach Woonsocket were Captain John Smith and his men who explored what is now known as Narragansett Bay on July 28, 1607. They named the bay after their leader, Wouter de Vere whose home was located on what is now Main Street in town. In 1768 Samuel Adams set up a blacksmith shop on State Street in town which still stands today. The first school opened for students in 1827 and it continued until 1917 when it closed due to lack of space. After that time there were numerous private schools until 1957 when Woonsocket became an part of the Providence School District system under then Superintendent Edwin Fenton Jr.. In 1907–08 Dr. Julius Weiser established an experimental farm adjacent to Fenton High School which grew into RI’s second largest agricultural enterprise of that era with over $1 million worth of products sold annually by 1985 according to state records including eggs, milk, pork chops, potatoes and more On October 3rd 1886 (the day before Thanksgiving) Martha Washington gave her famous address upon becoming President-elect Ulysses S Grant’s Vice Presidential nominee at Portsmouth’s Masonic Temple . That address has been preserved as “The Full House Address” ever since by local historians living within easy driving distance either here or atRIU Extension where I am privileged to deliver this lecture every year on behalf of our community Chestnut Hill Historical Society

The original churches in Woonsocket were built between 1760 and 1770 by Congregationalists under the leadership of Reverend Drury. In 1854, a Baptist church was organized in Woonsocket by Rev John Ladd. The city of Providence took over control of Woonsocket from its townsite trustees on July 1, 1907 following an Act of Congress entitled "An Act to Consolidate the authorities and functions of several civil government institutions within one municipal body." On January 1, 1908, Mayor Seymour Sayers dedicated the new John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum at 820 School Street in downtown Woonsocket after President John F Kennedy's inauguration as 45th president on January 20 that year. In 1974 local resident Tom Doherty founded Rhode Island's only rock band known today as Weasels with his basement rehearsal space located ontop of Smithfield Market across from Custom House Square where they played their first show December 6th 1974
