Woonsocket (also spelled Woolston and Worthington) is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 17,844 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Woonsocket County. The town was chartered on December 12, 1692 by Nicholas Easton as part of the Colony of Providence Plantations. In 1768, it became part of the Province of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. On July 1, 1949, Woonsocket became an independent municipality under the name of Woonsocket Township. The first post office opened in 1814 and closed in 1837; its last use was as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town's rich history comes from its many industries which have played a role in shaping the town today: manufacturing (textiles, paper products), agriculture (farming and fishing), transportation (railroads), and education (university). Today some of these industries still operate in or around Woonsocket: textiles giant Unicoin made its home here until it moved to China in 2016; while another textile company continues to produce jobs here thanks to a new factory being built just outside of town: Proctor & Gamble has been based here since 1912.
The town of Woonsocket was founded in 1638 by John Winthrop. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 200 people. In 1871, the town became the municipality of Woonsocket.
