In 1793, Woonsocket became a part of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. In 1814, Woonsocket became an independent village and reverted to its original name of New Providence Plantation. In 1901, the towns of Westerly and Portsmouth merged into Woonsocket Township. The population of Woonsocket reached over 10,000 people by 1920. In 1970, the townships were divided into two districts: Westerly District and Portsmouth-Woonster District. The citizens of both districts elected their own mayors until 1978 when they were combined into one district again which is now called Warwick District. On January 1st, 1984, WarwickDistrict disbanded and all its citizens moved to new boroughs formed from parts of Portsmouth-Woonster District including North Kingstown and South Kingstown which are now called Newport County Boroughs

Woonsocket is a town in the Providence metropolitan area, in Rhode Island. The population was 35,812 at the 2010 census. Woonsocket is one of the oldest towns in Rhode Island and has been inhabited by humans since before 10,000 BC. It was first settled by English colonists in 1638 as part of Narragansett Colony. The town's name comes from a local river called the Woonsocket River. The first settlers arriving in what is now Woonsocket were primarily farmers and their families. After years of growth and development, however,the town began to become an important manufacturing center for Providence during the late 19th century. In 1892, Woonsocket became part of the newProvidence– Warwick County seat; but it regained its independence as a separate municipality when Warwick County disbanded on January 1, 1909. In 1916, Woonsocket became home to RI’s first large municipal stadium when Municipal Stadium #1 was built on land that once housed the old Brown cotton warehouses used for storage and shipping around Narragansett Bayou (now known as Waterfront Park). The stadium hosted various events including soccer games between RI teams Providence Reds and Pawtucket Pirates and other sports until it burned down in 1978 following an accidental fire while being used for storage purposes. On July 14th 1954 at 7:00 PM Woonsocket’s own Samuel Adams Brewery released “Boston Brewer” which became one of America’s most popular craft beers - selling over 2 million cases per year! In 1978 Municipal Stadium #1 caught fire due to an accidental ignition resulting from incorrect wiring within the building- this unfortunately led to many ruined memories for young people who attended local high school games there throughout those years! Today Municipal Stadium #1 remains unoccupied and vacant but offers lovely views of downtown from upper floors!
Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island and the largest of the five towns in Providence. At 1,612 people as of 2010, it is also the most populous town in Providence County. The population has grown rapidly over the last few decades, reaching 1,849 according to the 2010 census. Woonsocket was first settled by English colonists in 1634 on land that now includes much of what is today Woonsocket Township and part of Warwick County. The town'sOriginal name was Willoughby after William Worthington, 2nd Viscount Willoughby (1624-1698). In 1776 during the American Revolution, Woonsocket sided with Patriots against British forces. In 1801, Woonsocket became a part of Providence County. After independence was won in 1802, Woonsocket became an incorporated town under state law and retained its independent status until 1959 when it merged with Providence into one municipality. In 1990s there were plans for a casino near central Woonsocket but these were scrapped due to lack of support from residents
