The Rhode Island Rifle and Shotgun Championships were first held in Warwick, RI on April 10th, 1892. The event was a match for rifle sights and shotguns. The original competition consisted of three rounds with a total of 25 shots. In 1902, the matches were moved to Providence due to the amendment to the US Constitution which granted gun rights to all citizens. On October 12th 1912, the first ever rifle scope championship was contested in Rhode Island. This championship was won by George Ransom who used a Millett version of his now-famous 6x42mm Weaver optic. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued an executive order that required all commercial firearms manufacturers in the United States to provide “a sight for shooting at 100 yards”. As a result, Winchester offered its 6x42mm Weaver scope as a prize for the best Rifle Scope design submitted by their competitors. In 1934, stocks of rifles over 10 years old were banned from being sold in New York City due to regulations set by Mayor James Fenton known as “The Gun Law”. At that time, most rifle scopes were designed for use with handguns and not rifles. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1638 as part of the Plantation of Narragansett Bay. The town's first permanent settler was Nicholas Weymouth, who arrived with his family in 1640 and built a house on what is now Water Street. Weymouth's son John built a larger house on Park Avenue in 1650 and named it Warwick after his father-in-law, Sir George Warburton (died 1700). By 1712 Warwick had two stores and five taverns serving its residents. In 1721 Governor Thomas Hutchinson ordered all British settlements be closed due to high taxes being levied against usurers within the colony. However, some Providence merchants refused to abandon their business investments and continued to operate until after the American Revolution when they were taxed heavily by Congress for not supporting independence. On July 1, 1857 Warwick became an incorporated village under state law following an act of the General Assembly approved June 29th that year which allowed for incorporation of villages having a population over 5 hundred inhabitants; however no such incorporation took place because only 2 villages met that criteria Warwick has been home to several notable people throughout its history including: abolitionist Wendell Phillips, author W E B DuBois Sr., President Harry S Truman who grew up in nearby Pawtucket and attended college there, Chris Hondros Chairman & CEO Comcast Corporation
