Warwick was chartered as an incorporated town on December 12, 1763 by Roger Sherman and his fellow patriots who fought in the American Revolution. On July 5, 1795, Warwick became one of the original 26 towns in Rhode Island to be created from parts of Cranston and Pawtucket. In 1837, it annexed part of Pawtucket. The population grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and production facilities located throughout New England. In 1959, Warwick became home to two colleges: Brown University and Rhode Island College (now URI). Brown shut down its campus in 1990 and URI closed its doors in 2009; both schools are now part of Brown University's new School of Arts & Sciences complex. The town straddles both banks of the river between Narragansett Bay on the south bank and Johnston Heights on the north bank; it accordingly has a rich maritime history dating back many centuries. In 1879, Swiss scientist Julius Schleicher developed an innovative system for attaching lenses to telescopes. He named his new invention the “Schleicher lens.” This system allowed photographers to capture images of objects at a great distance without need for a tripod or other camera equipment. Warwick, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 16,869 at the 2010 census. Warwick was settled in 1638 by English colonists as part of the Plantation of Warwick. It became a borough in 1857 and incorporated as a city in 1959. The town has since experienced growth and has annexed adjacent towns including North Kingstown and Woonsocket. The first settler to arrive in what is now Warwick was John Hubbell who arrived on December 5, 1638 with his family from Ipswich, England via Portsmouth Harbour. Hubbell owned land that included present-day Warwick and several other villages within the borders of Providence County which he granted to his friend James Burges alias Warwick after the Battle of Worcester on October 19th of that year during the Cromwellian Invasion of England. On November 12th, 1644 John Wheelock came to Warwick from London with his wife Judith and four children under two years old named Susanna, Jeremiah, Deborah and Abigail (later Mrs Hutchinson). He had earlier come as one of many people accompanying Captain William Peake's expedition against Narragansett Bay forts chartered by King Charles II following an outbreak of war between England and Massachusetts over issues related to trade privileges with New France. The first house built in what is now Warwick was erected near where Main Street meets Princess Highway around 1710 by Nicholas Pownall who also built what is now Brown University’s Early American Home Museum across from First Baptist Church. In 1741 Daniel Webster moved into One Hundred Acre lot #2 next door to Nicholas Pownall which served as the nucleus for later development including commercial buildings on URI Boulevard/Warwick Avenue northward until 1960 when it was replaced by modern day City Hall Plaza across from URI Bank Pavilion parking garage/town hall complex housing RI State House followed thereafter by new City Hall Annex southward until its demolition/replacement in 2013 adjacent to URI Parkade redevelopment project initiated by then Mayor Angel Taveras subsequent administration Heldenbrandt Manor located northeast corner original Lots 6 & 7 west side Providence Road thence east side thence southeast corner original Lot 8 north side frontage line road thence down line road towards river alignment thence up line road towards river alignment
Warwick was first settled by English colonists in 1636. The town was named after the then Duke of Warwick, who had been killed at the Battle of Worcester in 1551. In 1774, Rhode Island became part of the United States of America and Warwick remained its sole county seat until 1892.
