Warwick also has a number of small businesses including five grocery stores, thirteen hair salons/spas, six liquor stores, four bowling alleys/bars/restaurants, two golf courses and one tennis court. In recent years Warwick has seen an increase in development with new housing developments such as the Warwick Village project which includes 675 homes; a mix of single family homes and apartments; as well as a variety of retail stores; office buildings; a new jail;and two large parks that offer open space for recreation purposes as well as educational opportunities for residents

Warwick was founded in 1638 by Sir John Warwick and his wife Lady Margaret Pole. The town became a part of Rhode Island in 1746, after the Province of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was created from parts of the colony of Massachusetts. Warwick had a population of about 15,000 people in 1800, but it sank to about 5,000 by 1830. However, the town's decline may have been due to its isolated location, its lack of industry and its dependence on agriculture for income. In 1871, Warwick's population was only 2,500 people. The first settler in Warwick was John Whitehead who arrived in 1638. Whitehead erected a small cabin near what is now Main Street. He also built some other early buildings including a house on Narragansett Bay which he used as his home until 1712 when he sold it to Judge Isaac Wright for $1 per acre (about £6). In 1720 Nicholas Weymouth moved from Portsmouth to Warwick with his family and began raising hogs and pigs there. Weymouths were among the first white men to live along Narragansett Bayou where they raised corn and pork for their own use as well as selling meat to local farmers. By 1740 they had increased their holdings to over two hundred acres (about 50 hectares). Weymouth had three sons: Nathaniel, Joseph and James who all became important leaders in Rhode Island politics during the 18th century; Nathanial served as lieutenant governor from 1784-1785; James served as secretary at war under George Washington from 17911801;Joseph died unmarried at age fifty-four years old on November 8th,1792 while serving in Warrenton County Court Room during an election held that day between Nicholas Weymouth Jr., one son of Nathaniel Weymouth Sr., James Payson alias Parsonagee (2nd cousin once removed), Thomas Greenway alias Richard Greenway (son-in-law) Nathanael Greene (brother-in-law) against incumbent William Brown who had been elected unanimously by ballot cast by freeholders present at the meeting since no women could vote then or anywheres else within the Colony . Brown ran unsuccessfully again two years later . After Brown’s death without children Nathanial succeeded him becoming Lieutenant Governor with full powers effective January 1st 1801 service amounting 3 years 4 months duration unexpired Nathanael Greene further advanced political career having been chosen delegate from RI to Convention Held at Annapolis MD Convened To Loyalty And Obedience To King George I His Most Grateful subjects On April 12th 1800 remained In Convention & Adopted A Bill For Representation In General Assembly Which Was Passed But Failed To Ratify As No Men Were Present At The Session Hoping That If They Should Make Another Attempt Too Late They Would Be Successful This Event Made Him Very Venerable Among his Countrymen After His Death He Was buried In Henry Higginson’s Graveyard Nearwherehe Lived When Died
