Warwick is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 9,583 at the 2010 census. Warwick was first settled by English colonists in 1636. The town was originally part of theProvidence Plantation and became an independent community in 1795. Warwick gained city status in 1898 and has since been home to a mayor and five-member City Council. It is also the location of Brown University and many other colleges and universities. The history of Warwick goes back over 350 years to when English colonists first arrived in what is now Providence County. At that time, the area was known as Wanapaug Country because most of the people were Native American Stamford Indians who had lived there for centuries. In 1636, one group of settlers from England's Plymouth Colony established themselves on land that included present-day Warwick Township, which they called Newington Hundred. They built their house—later known as Whitehall—on what is now South Main Street. One early settler, Nicholas Cotton (1627–1672), erected a small log cabin on North Bridge Road near today's State House Square about two miles north of wherepresent-day Warwick sits today. In 1795, when Rhode Island became an independent state, Warwick became part of the new colony of Providence Plantations under British rule. This meant that it continued to be part of Massachusetts until 1802 – when it voted to become its own separate colony again under British rule with its own governor and government system! The following year saw the founding of Brown University here in downtown Warwick by James Brown (1764–1837). That institution would have a significant impact on both local politics and culture throughout much of 19th century America! During World War II, many jobs were created here thanks to wartime production efforts such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing; however, after the war ended many factories closed or relocated elsewhere due to competition from foreign countries during peacetime times! However, some high-profile businesses such as Quaker Oats still exist in Warwick today! Today's economy relies heavily upon education; brown university remains one of the leading employers here with approximately 100 employees; while nearby Rhode Island Hospital provides healthcare for everyone within easy reach! There are also several restaurants and bars located throughout townsite including State House Square which often hosts events like car shows or outdoor concerts!
