Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. The population was 12,627 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated community of Northfield is located within Providence proper. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Providence were Dutch and Irish farmers who arrived around 1635-1638. In 1639, the English took over the Dutch colony and soon began to outfit their own local militias with weapons and ammunition by purchasing supplies from London merchants dealing in such items as firearms and powder. By 1641, English forces had expelled all but a few of the Dutch colonists while they continued to maintain military presence in what became known as New Netherland (later New York). In 1645, England granted Massachusetts Bay Colony (now Rhode Island) to Sir Edmund Rich as an act of revenge for Connecticut's part in signing the Agreement of Hartford which successfully opposed English efforts to take over both colonies. On December 14th, 1645, King George II granted land east of Narragansett Bay to John Winthrop on condition that he establish a Protestant church thereon within five years; however no such church was built until after Winthrop's death in 1701. On July 15th, 1700 Providence established its first government under Governor John Clarke with James Barker serving as its first Mayor - this government only lasted for about two months before Barker was impeached for bribery and conspiracy charges which led to his impeachment trial which ended up being successful but did not result in his reinstatement into office due to lack evidence against him beyond reasonable doubt).
