The rifle range and powder magazine were established in 1814 by Captain Moses Brown. In 1867, handguns began to be marketed to residents of Providence through a local store run by George Higginson. soon after, there were also rifle ranges and pistol clubs. In 1907-8, locals built a new Target Range and Shooting Club on High Street near what is now Park Place Shopping Center. This club became an important Anchor for Gunnery Instruction for both men and boys from all over Rhode Island until it closed its doors in 1972 due to budget cuts. A new target range was constructed at North Kingstown High School in 1996 which opened to the public with great success.

The first mayor of Providence was John Fenton and the current mayor is Jorge Elorza. The history of Providence can be traced back to 1636 when English colonists arrived on the island of Providence, now known as Rhode Island. They founded a trading post named Fort Tryon on present-day Warwick Boulevard near what is now University Avenue. In 1638, Sir Walter Raleigh landed with his fleet at Narragansett Bay and built a new fort here called Redeemed House for Queen Elizabeth II's pleasure gardens. In 1781, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington's forces besieged Newport News Castle from land across Narragansett Bay until they were relieved by Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's fleet under Rear Admiral Nicholas Farrand. On July 4th of that year General Thomas Gage arrived at Newport News from Portsmouth with 10 thousand troops aboard his flagship Great Britain after disembarking from HMS Guerriere off Cape May Point opposite Northampton County on Long Island Sound; he had sailed upriver several days earlier without orders from Congress which had been convened in Philadelphia following King George III's proclamation declaring war against France Despite being outnumbered three to one by British forces, Gage successfully defended Newport News until relieved by Cornwallis' army under General Richard Howe on September 3rd after two weeks hard fighting with very few losses on Gage's part On December 14th before departing for home via Portsmouth, Gage ordered Commodore William Tryon to steam down Narragansett Bay "to put Distance between us and them" - this would be their last major engagement before they surrendered at Yorktown four months later ! From thenforward any significant military activity occurred off shore or along the James River where British warships anchored offshore . During these years many tradesmen settled down in what are today downtown Providence including carpenters (John Brown who built Brown University), blacksmiths ( Josiah Quincy who developed Quincy Market), potters (Samuel Morse whose telegraph line connected Boston and Hartford) boatbuilders (Hugh Hefner), brewers (Jeremiah Perkins who started RI Brewery), slaters ( Edmund Tuttle ), etchers (Jacob Riis ), librarians (/ Mrs Jane Addams ); all while large sections of downtown were undeveloped . From its earliest days as an Anglican settlement Jamestown grew rapidly becoming self-sufficient with farmers growing cornmeal, beef cattle, eggs etc., while 400 men served apprenticeships to local businesses such as sailmakers and carpenters; most working long hours 10–12 hours per day/week outside weather conditions . By 1795 there were 50 families living there supporting 30 employees; services included shoeshine service done door-to-door with horses drawn carts , laundry done by women using water heated by wood fires out front ; social activities included music parties outdoors followed by dinner indoors where puddings could be enjoyed
