It is one of two cities in Rhode Island and the only one outside of the Providence- Warwick- Fall River Combined Statistical Area. Providence's history dates back to 1636 when English colonists arrived on the island and founded what would become known as Providence Plantation. The first white settlers arrived in 1638, and by 1753, all but four of the original thirteen families had moved away from what is now Providence to found new settlements on Narragansett Bayou and elsewhere. In 1814, after months of negotiations between American commissioners and Native Americans, Providence was ceded to America by Britain as part of the Treaty of Ghent. During its early years, Providence was a small frontier town with few resources other than agriculture and fishing; however, over time it became an important center for trade and commerce because of its location within easy reach of both New York City (by sea) and Boston (via land). The city's growth came about primarily through annexation by other municipalities: in 1854 it was annexed by Worcester; in 1898 it was annexed by Fall River; in 1924 it became part of Pawtucket; finally, in 1938 it became an independent municipality under its current name. The city has experienced several cycles of prosperity and decline throughout its history. Its heyday occurred during Reconstruction period from 1865 to 1877 when manufacturing jobs created around downtown helped contribute to industrial growth which then supported services like education and health care giants like Yale University and Brown University while downtown businesses prospered along with residential development that surrounded Eastern Market Place soup kitchens for low-income residents who did not have access to better neighborhoods elsewhere.
