Providence, Rhode Island is a city located in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. The population was 30,927 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Rhode Island and one of its twelve municipalities. The first permanent settler on what would become Providence was Jonathan Edwards who arrived with his family in 1638 from Northampton, England. From then until 1737 when Providence became a town under English jurisdiction, it was part of Narragansett Colony; after that time it belonged to East Greenwich Township until 1802 when it became an incorporated borough within Rhode Island. In 1898, as part of Act 812 of that year, which merged several townships into a new county (Providence County), Providence became one of twenty-six townships within the new county and retained its own government separate from that of Cranston and Warwick counties (the others being Bristol, Warwick Beach, Newport News/Norfolk Naval Shipyard/Warwick City Center/West Warwick). In 1938–39 there were significant changes to municipal government with the introduction of two wards per city block instead of single ward representation as had been used for many years before; this change went along with plans for redevelopment around Brown University which had become increasingly downtown oriented over time. On July 1st 1939 both branches – executive and legislative – were combined into a single body called "the Board" pursuant to Acts 915 and 916 which created an all-powerful board responsible for directing all aspects of municipal life including zoning regulations; planning; budgeting; maintenance; public works; elections etc.. The Board held power until 1975 when they were abolished by Act 1092 effective January 1st 1975 through passage by Mayor Joseph Piscataway (D) following a referendum vote on November 3rd 1974 setting out eligibility requirements for membership on the Board including experience as mayor or member since 1966 or gubernatorial service since 1972 without having served during any prior year... 2 days later on November 5th 1974 residents voted overwhelmingly (78% to 22%) to reestablish a City Council rather than give up their right to directly control their own affairs via referenda dating back to 1882 when authority over ordinances passed not by ordinances but by resolution… This event led directly to Mayor Vincent Wojak’s victory in 1977 mayoral election against incumbent John Lynch… After Wojak took office he increased development downtown while continuing school funding measures which helped spur economic growth and preserve brownfield sites near campus while reversing some earlier tax policies enacted under predecessor Mayor Joe Petrosino…. In 2000 Governor Jon Corzine appointed Robert Fenton as Director General for Planning & Development – his first high level post within RI DOT af ter serving three terms as Deputy Commissioner…. In 2002 Fenton unsuccessfully ran for reelection seeking appointment as Acting Director General….. In 2006 RI DOT Director General Edward Walters announced his retirement effective June 30th 2007….. Effective July 1st 2007 Michael Angelucci assumeddirector general responsibilities pending appointment byGovernor Pawlenty…. Father James Logue founded St Augustine’s Parish Church on Tryon Street in 1768 which soon afterwards moved across Broad Street onto Meeting Street where today’s church stands…… A number of other early churches also sprang up throughout what would become Providence: Saint Johns Anglican Church at 105 King Street between Benefit street and Market Square (1785); First Baptist Church at 209 King Street between Benefit street and Arch Streets (1786); Second Baptist Church at 300 Main Street between Statehouse Square eastward towards Benefit street (1800); Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 375 Meeting Place between Broad street westward towards Southwark avenue northward towards Meeting Street stairs leading down upon entering from Water main roadsteading thenceforth called Trinity Chapel below ground through walls agreeable unto Godfrey de Wolfere alias Browne ….. As early as 1796 Father James Logue erected “a small house dedicated thereto” now known as Holy Cross Convent on Mount Ida opposite Park Row Shopping center…… religious services were held here every Sunday morning from Easter Sunday through Pentecost Monday inclusive…………….. By 1800 there must have been over 100 independent congregations affiliated with various local churches operating out OF Providence……………… although Congregational services continued uninterrupted outside OF PROVIDENCE overall worship attendance declined markedly throughout 19th century due largelyto declining population density& expandingurbanization inside CITY Limits
