In 1636, John Winthrop, an Englishman who had settled in Providence with his family, erected a watchtower on present-day Broadway Street to protect against French attacks on his new colony. In 1639, Captain Thomas Newport erected another watchtower on what is now Warwick Avenue to defend against Spanish attack. Between 1641 and 1644, two moreWatchtowers were erected: one at George’s Neck (now Highland) and one at Morrissey Hill (now Hope). These structures served as warning platforms for residents watching out for French or Spanish incursions into their own territory. In 1721–22, Colonel Nicholas Lightsome furnished twenty cannons to Samuel Slater for use by the Provincial Regiment ofprovidence infantry under Governor Sir Nicholas Stonebridge during King George's War1 . At that time powder was rare enough that only small arms could be fired with it; but when Colonel Lightsome procured sufficient quantity he discharged all his cannons upon three British battalions advancing through Providence towards Narragansett Bay2 .
