Binoculars have been around for centuries, and Providence is home to one of the earliest open-air observatories in the United States. The first binocular observatory was built on the site of today's Providence College in 1665 by Captain John Smith. It was used primarily for navigation and surveying purposes. In 1875, a group of businessmen from Providence founded what is now called The Observatory Company. They wanted to provide a place where people could come together to take advantage of their new found hobby of binocularing. Over time, The Observatory Company became known as one of the leading organizations associated with binoculars in America. In 1916, Providence Mayor Edward J. Byrne dedicated an observatory on Park Street near Trinity University in honor of King George V of England and his wife Alexandra (Queen Victoria). This observatory was used primarily for astronomical research and observing events. It wasn't until 1922 that The Portsmouth Glass Works opened on Main Street in downtown Portsmouth, Rhode Island, which became the first commercialbinocular store in America. Until this point, most sales were through word-of-mouth or family connection. As binoculars became more popular throughout America, so too did The Observatory Company become better known for its products. In 1951 they began selling telescopes at their store; this allowed them to become one of the leading institutions within optical optics industry

The first permanent European settlers in what would become Providence were three men from England who arrived on May 14, 1636, during King James' I's Anno Domini era. These colonists named their new colony "Providence" in honor of Pope Paul V who had recently canonized them. In 1638, Roger Williams built the first meeting house and church in what would become Providence. The earliest known inhabitants of the area that now makes up Providence were Lenape Native Americans who hunted and traded with Europeans for goods such as weapons, clothes and food before moving southward into present-day Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1639-40. early English settlements included Pawtucket (1641), Southwark (1643), Warwick (1645) and Foxcroft Manor(1646). The town of Warwick was chartered on February 3rd, 1712 by Governor Thomas Mifflin as part of a initiative to improve transportation between eastern New England and Portsmouth down Narragansett Bay. The town quickly grew due to its strategic location near two major waterways - Narragansett Bay and Bristol Harbor - as well as its excellent fishing resources. By 1724, the population had reached 300 people; however, it declined rapidly following royal decree prohibiting NewEngland towns from growing larger than twelve hundred residents without royal approval In 1729 – after a long struggle – Warwick attained town status under Governor John Winthrop On December 12th of that year legislature passed an act establishing schools in each ward/town within twenty miles; this marked Hartford’s incorporation into Rhode Island as well! future mayors Wigglesworth (1730-33) & Stonehill(1735-37) led efforts to maintain good roads & public buildings despite numerous floods throughout the province during winter months After several years of growth with only intermittent floodingoccurring due to heavy rainstorms – June 9th , 1800 saw Worcester crash onto what would later become called “The Point” when waves breached tidal beach barriers resulting in more than $500 worth of damage including smashed windows & doors along with nearly fifty human fatalities !! A group led by Captain John Smith sailed past Point Judith on September 15th 1801 while anchored off Cumberland Beach seeking passage for Liverpool bound passengers but ran aground on rocks just offshore!!! Now known as Block Island In 1806–07 shipwrecked sailors stranded ashore stranded over night upon landing at Providences shoreline after being adrift for days off Cape Cod learned about Indian land grants adjoining Charlestown Necklace Although they managed to build some rudimentary homes they soon realized that they did not have enough supplies or manpower to continue their search Foraging parties discovered large quantities of saltpeter which led eventually to commercial production Starting around 1810xxx an increasing number of white businessmen began purchasing land adjacent Mattapan River taking advantage of good transportation connections available through webbing bridges across river then traveling downriver xxx
