Providence, Rhode Island is a small town in central Rhode Island and the seat of Providence County. The population was 34,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New England metropolitan area. The town's name comes from two English settlers, John Provost and Nicholas Provost, who arrived in 1638. Providence was settled by Puritans after they moved from Massachusetts in 1636. The first permanent settler in Providence was Nicholas Provost, who arrived with his brother John in 1638. They were among the earliest English colonists to arrive in what is now Rhode Island and built a sawmill on Narragansett Bay. In 1644, they founded the First Congregational Church in Providence. In 1737, they erected a brick courthouse which has been standing since 1829. The first post office for Providence opened on December 12, 1800, and remained open until it closed on March 13, 1865; it was then replaced by the present post office building (now known as Hynes Hall). The first storehouse for troops stationed at Fort George was built here in 1775; it burned down during the American Revolution but was rebuilt and became an important depot for goods arriving by sea from Britain and Europe. After independence came about under British rule, many residents fled to Canada or Nova Scotia because of fears that their homes would be taken away if they remained under American control. Some returned after Patriots took over government during the revolution but many others decided to stay out when America declared its independence on April 14th,. In 1812–1813 Governor James Kneeland organized a militia battalion to suppress uprisings against British rule throughout New England; this unit later became known as "the Providences." On July 6 of that year General Nathaniel Greene ordered all militiamen within three miles (5 km) of Boston must unconditional surrender without any conditions or explanations; this order caused heavy losses for both sides as most men chose not to fight when faced with such an overwhelming force at home alone (). Many people who had supported Patriots during the revolution turned Loyalist once America won her independency – especially those living near Boston proper where Patriot sentiment ran high due to recent Tory-controlled government policies (). During King George III's reign there were numerous incidents where Tories tried to take advantage of Americans by rounding up unarmed civilians (), sometimes resulting in killings (). For example: A group of Tories raiding into Newport killed ten innocent farmers () On October 15th., 1786 an armed party of Tories set fire to Government House (later renamed King’s Chapel) while worshipers were inside after having broken into several buildings including Barnstable Village House (); only one person died as a result of this raid (). There have also been cases where patriots have fought counter-revolutionary forces (), like when Timothy Pickering led 300 men against 1,500 rebels near Portsmouth () or Thomas Mifflin unsuccessfully attacked 25 Tory houses outside Kingston () In short there are numerous examples demonstrating how militias can quickly become embroiled with politics should things get too hot for either side
