According to one source, Indians called the settlement "Wakefield." Some early settlers were John Smith, Sr., Edward Winslow, Samuel Browning and others who arrived between 1636 and 1640 from England aboard HMS Mayflower; they were followed by many more during subsequent waves of English immigrants in the seventeenth century including John Winthrop (1605-1649), Increase Mather (1623-1692) and Cotton Mather (17th century). Some Jews also settled in Pawtucket during this time period; however most converted to Christianity before 1700. In 1734 Governor William Tryon sent a battalion of soldiers from New York under Colonel Nicholas Baker to quash a rising among colonists in nearby Newport County prompted by an increase in taxes levied by Tryon's predecessor, James Knyvett. After suppressing the uprising with force, Baker returned home but left behind 1 regiment of infantry under Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Arnold which became known as "The Rangers." In 1735 Tryon again sent a regiment of troops to suppress an insurrection led by Captain Israel Putnam involving some local Indian natives; again no violence occurred although several people were killed and many homes burned down. During King George's War (1756-1763), General John Burgoyne landed at Marblehead on Long Island on 4 October 1755 with about 2500 men army[2] seeking refuge from British forces marching through Massachusetts into Canada under General Charles Cornwallis who had taken prisoner Sir Ralph Waldo Emerson two days earlier when Burgoyne sacked Sandwich on Cape Cod[3]. As Burgoyne's army advanced northeastward along Narragansett Bay towards Pawtucket some residents took flight or hid inside buildings until relieved by militia horse cavalry coming from then northward downriver,[4]: [5]: [6]: [7] On 10 October Lord Dartmouth landed at North Head near present day Portsmouth[8], following orders given him there not to cross Narragansett Bay without permission from Richmondborough Castle where he was quartered having recently moved after failed negotiations with King George II regarding war goals[9]. This incident marked beginning of open warfare between Great Britain 8 miles off shore administered directly by colonials & their British protectors - one that would last throughout much of North America
