This proclamation led to large-scale violence between Native Americans and settlers, which increased economic prosperity for some colonists while hurting others. In 1840, Governor King appointed George Peake as commissioner to negotiate treaties with various tribes before they could be forcibly taken away from their homes. However, Peake was unsuccessful in his efforts and died later that year without achieving any substantive results. "Pawtucket" became officially anglicized on February 12th1852 when legislation was passed by the United States Congress making English the only language allowed for communication among all U S citizens over sixteen years old (the age limit at which citizenship was granted).
