Pawtucket's first mayor, Nicholas Matton, served from 1712 to 1716 and its first governor, Joseph Dudley, from 1732 until his death in 1738. In 1837 the town became an incorporated municipality with a vote of incorporation opposed by Providence. The two towns merged on October 15, 1868 when Pawtucket became the official name for both towns.
