In 1767, Colonel Thomas Gage built a military fortification on the western side of Narragansett Bay which became known as Fort Gage. In 1814-1815 during War of 1812 Pawtucket was captured by British forces under General James Kempton and renamed Kingston upon Hull after Great Britain's largest city. In 1898-1900 construction began on Interstate 95 through what is now downtown Pawtucket and also created an industrial park that extended into today's Fenway Park area. The city experienced rapid growth following World War II with an increase in jobs resulting from new production within the manufacturing sector due to increased demand for munitions abroad and an influx of workers from other parts of New England; however, this period also saw a number of significant community disruptions including racial riots that took place throughout much of 1945-1946 after black soldiers returned home from World War II without any GI benefits and were refused access to housing or education opportunities commensurate with their rank or experience gained while serving our country abroad. A defining moment for pawtown occurred on September 12th 1956 when Mayor Angelo Rossi announced plans to rename Main Street following complaints made by residents about its current name – Merchant Street – which they felt did not reflect well either physically or historically speaking given that many key members both inside and outside City Hall had been using Merchant Street until shortly before Rossi's announcement even though it was designated as Second Avenue back then too! After much deliberation over several weeks everyone finally agreed that Main Street should be changed to Atlantic Avenue honouring all those who have helped make pawtown what it is today including virtually every political leader catered especially towards Providence’s sizable African American population! And so On September 12th 1958 Atlantic Ave became pawtown’s official street name!
