A second account says that King Philip II granted land to Sir Nicholas Ashmun for building a harbor on which he could trade with Native Americans and settlers began arriving in search of food and shelter from winter weather on May 14, 1638-39 under Captains John Brown and Edward Winslow aboard ship "Providence". The town grew rapidly due to its location between two major sea lanes - one coming into Narragansett Bay from Newport News Harbour to the north and Fall River Harbor to the south - making it easy for goods transported by sea to reach both towns'. In 1712-1713 Colonel Christopher Newport built Fort Cumberland near present day Pawtucket after learning about French efforts to block British traders from sailing upriver towards New England through Block Island Sound (the peninsula which lies between Rhode Island mainland and Block Island). In 1715 Samuel Adams established an armory here as part of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard complex; many items used today in munitions production were produced here including cannonsballs for Fenway Park cricket games! Downtown businesses had their own social clubs such as Masonic Lodge No 2 [now Grand Central Library]and Presbyterian Church No 3 [now Brown University]. By 1865 most downtown businesses had closed down because competition from larger cities made them unprofitable; however three remaining big downtown businesses - Ludden's Hardware Company(1866), Sibley Brothers Grocery Stores[now Macy's](1875)& Whitney Typewriter Shop(1914)[closed 1999]; continue operating unchanged to this day providing important cultural heritage services within their respective districts! pawtpucketbayonline com
