Newport's rich maritime history began with its location on Narragansett Bay: two Dutch ships were wrecked here in 1634 and 1635; HMS "Portsmouth" foundered off Cape Cod in 1636; both vessels' crews were saved by local Indians who used their knowledge to build a shelter for them that still stands today—the first known European settlement on what is now Narragansett Bay. In 1723 Captain John Smith explored these waters when he led his expedition from Jamestown to attack Wampanoag Indians living near Portsmouth Harbour; after landing his men there he sailed back upriver to find more supplies before reaching England three months later with news that America had been discovered! Once word spread about America's new land, wealthy families from England set out to hunt for new possessions in this vast country—a process that continued until 1776 when Britain lost her colonies except for Rhode Island! The first person born in Newport was Samuel Adams who lived there from 1701-1715; he developed one of the earliest successful privateering careers in America. Other early settlers included James Ives (1688-1750), who built an estate called Weymouth House which still stands today; Moses Hill (1800-1873), also one of America’s most prominent planters; Anthony Parsons (1720-1807); Increase Mather (1685-1774), one of Boston’s leading Congregational ministers; Nathaniel Gorham (1727-1802); Andrew Lewis (c., 1700-c., 1800)—the last white male native speakerofRhodeIslandese died here on February 5th 1830 during an epidemic pandemic called “Farewell Spring” caused by smallpox imported overlanders into New England during King George II's American Revolution.—and Joseph Slocum(c., 1700–after c., 1800)—the discoverer[5]ofNantucket Island which made him famous throughout Atlantic Canada

The name for this early community was Coddington Plantation after Colonel Thomas Coddington of London who donated land for the colony, which became known as Pawtucket Plantation because he and his fellow investors used their own money to built the town on a peninsula on Narragansett Bay that stretched into Narragansettshire (now Queens County). In 1722, Portsmouth– Warwick Station—the first stop on the Northampton branch of the Underground Railroad—was founded by refugees from King George's Warwick Station in western Warwick County; it served as a safe haven for fugitive slaves until 1865 when it closed following Virginia’s secession from the Union. Over time, other slave stops were established around this area such as Battle Point (1799), East Greenwich (1802), Newfields (1805), West Greenwich (1807), Southold (1811) and Cranston (1815). On March 9, 1635, Plymouth Colony's General Court approved plans by Captain John Smith to establish a new English colony called Newport on Narragansett Bay due to concerns about malaria epidemics sweeping much of Europe at that time; Smith sailed with 169 men under Captains William Bradford and Nicholas Paulet aboard HMS Mayflower set out December 2nd for Providence Harbor but encountered strong winds and weather conditions lasting all winter that delayed their arrival there until late February or early March; they reached Newport on April 12th before sailing downriver to put up tents among some abandoned Indian villages where they met local war canoes coming downriver carrying supplies for Narragansettshire militia led by Captain Edward Winslow; over time settlers began arriving through trade with nearby Rhode Islanders along with goods brought overland through Connecticut via Salem/Providence Coach Road based at Saybrook Tavern; this growing commerce helped drive economic development around Newport throughout most of colonial times culminating with its incorporation into British America as an independent city on July 4th following several days of peaceful protests led by Mayor Joseph Bloomfield against Director Samuel Adams' decision to admitRhode Island into Confederation without providing financial compensation "Newport", an unincorporated community located within Portsmouth Borough limits since 1903,[2] is sometimes erroneously reported as being located within Warwick County while actually lying within Cranston Township.[3] However, both towns are administratively separate municipalities.] In 1722,[4] Portsmouth– Warwick Station—the first stop on the Northampton branch of the Underground Railroad—was founded by refugees from King George's Warwick Station in western Warwick County; it served as a safe haven for fugitive slaves until 1865 when it closed following Virginia’s secession from the Union."
