The Newport Rifle Scopes Company was founded in 1875 by Captain John H. Griggs and his brother-in-law, George W. Foard. The company was originally located on Church Street in Newport and produced a wide range of rifle scopes from single-to multi- focal lengths. The company also manufactured eye cups and reflex sights for shotguns, soon becoming a well known source for these products in the Rhode Island market. In 1916, the Griggs brothers sold the company to Julius Kapp and his son Julius Jr. The business continued as Kapp/Griggs Rifle Scopes until 1969 when it merged with other rifle scopes producers to form American Optics Incorporated (AOI). AOI continues to produce quality riflescope products today under the name American OpticsCOBRA line of optics. In 1875, Captain John H. Griggs founded the Newport Rifle Scopes Company in Newport, Rhode Island because he wanted to produce a high quality rifle scope at an affordable price point that would be available to any shooter. At its peak production capacity, the company produced over 100 different rifle scopes models including single-tomulti- focal length options as well as Reflex sights and eye cups for shotguns. The Griggs Brothers operated their business primarily out of their home on Church Street in Newport until 1916 when they sold it to Julius Kapp who ran it as Kapp/Griggs Rifle Scopes until 1969 when it merged with other rifle scopes producers to form American Optics Incorporated (AOI). Inlet Point Light Station lies just south of town across from I-95 exit 17B on US 1A from southbound US 1A towards Pawtucket Inlet Point Light Station marks one end point along both longitude lines for both locales - approximately 1840 degrees W latitude (−71 degrees 58 minutes N) On average each day during summertime National Weather Service meteorologists issue forecasts at Inlet PointLightStation - free from interference from other activities ashore or offshore!
