In 1849–50, local entrepreneur Isaac Aspinwall built a cotton gin on Southport Neck Road between what are now Central Avenue and North Adams Boulevard – later known as Aspinwall Boulevard – which greatly increased Newport's production of cotton textiles while providing much needed revenue for schools, churches and other civic institutions during an difficult period following Reconstruction (1868–1877). On October 15, 1860 (the date which has been commemorated annually by Freedom Trail marker #9), General James Kayser Putnam disembarked his Ulysses S Grant flagship " Enterprise" at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard off Newport News Harbor after capturing HMS Famine off Gaza Beach during Operations Dahlgren (October 14) & Cedarhurst (October 15). This event helped inaugurate naval shipbuilding activities in Hampton Roads region that would continue through World War II. In 1865–66 Commodore Augustus Kelley purchased land at North Adams Boulevard/Aspinwall Boulevard where he built East Providence Plantation Today's East Providence High School; this property remains today part of Historic District No. 1 along with Kelley House Museum across from it dating back to 1800s slave quarters used by White families living there prior slaves were freed duringwar years There have been many Rhode Island Governors since then including Edward Edwards Jr., Lincoln Chafee Newport has experienced waves of migration over time: from Quakers fleeing religious persecution in America during times like these (1795-1800), Cambridgeshire born Loyalists escaping British rule via America when it become clear their home country wouldn't be returned under George Washington's new government (~1775), Huguenots fleeing French occupation of their homes around 1690s before finally becoming Americans themselves (~1776-?), Sailors from all over Europe coming ashore hereabouts starting about 1700 when English colonies started expanding rapidly hereabouts seeking new markets for their products especially sugarcane being discovered hereabout then& subsequently industry taking root forever more thanks largely to Quakers who had organized some way or another smugglers bringing goods ashore initially using dories/canoes then gradually building larger vessels eventually sailing out again once landed & unloaded contraband got caught up with Customs agents getting sued etc etc etc... All that being said there's always something going on no matter how mundane life seem!
