Newport, Rhode Island is a town in the Providence County of Rhode Island. The population was 31,592 at the 2010 census. Newport is one of the most significant economic and cultural centers in central Rhode Island and also home to Brown University, War Memorial Stadium, and other major institutions. The first European settlement in what is now Newport was made by Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 12, 1635 as part of his search for a new route to India. The Dutch established a trading post at Newport in 1638. The English founded Newport Plantation on May 14, 1643 as part of an effort to gain control over Narragansett Bay. In 1664 the English captured and burned Providence after a three-day siege led by Colonel John Barnet. In 1768 Hurricane Sandy destroyed much of Portsmouth while Newfane Parish was recovering from French forces burning it during the French and Indian War (1756-63). A long period of neglect followed until 1853 when Captain Amos Huston organized an expedition to explore wrecked vessels off Newport Harbor which led him to found the first commercial fishing company in America with some 126 fishermen operating out of Newport by 1860. The town's growth reflects its location midway between two maritime capitals – London and Boston – as well as its close connection with naval activities through merchant shipping channels linking both ports. This proximity allowed for development of industries such as textiles, shoes, soap products, seafood processing (the early fishers exploited tidal waters), shipbuilding (the construction industry began with clinker built vessels), brickmaking (the town became known for its special type of brick used for buildings), meatpacking (early animals were killed here then dried before packaging), lumber production (logging became an important sector following repeal of Prohibition) and numerous small businesses that supplied these sectors with materials or services necessary for day-to-day life within local communities across many years until they too withered away during prohibition's later years; however several restored old mills remain today providing employment opportunities for locals throughout the year
Newport, Rhode Island is a town in the U.S. state of Rhode Island and part of the Providence metropolitan area. The population was 113,824 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Pawtucket to the west, Fall River to the north, Newport Beach to the east, and South Kingstown to the south. The river that forms its eastern border is known locally as Narragansett Bay. The first permanent English settlement in what became Newport was founded on October 12, 1634 by John Smith with 50 men under his command as part of an effort to establish English control over all of New England following their victory over Spanish forces at Battle of Pocomoke Creek two days earlier. At that time it was also considered part of Plymouth Colony which had been organized four years earlier originally as an effort by Increase Mather and other colonists toristan Captains Simon Wigglesworth and Nicholas Noyes to build a military presence in support of John Winthrop's religious colony efforts in Massachusetts Bay region. With Wigglesworth dead from wounds received during Pocomoke Creek battle, Noyes assumed leadership of Plymouth Colony until he too died in 1638. In 1635-1636 vassal French colonists established themselves along Narragansett Bayough trading with Indian tribes while they awaited news from France about whether or not they would be allowed entry into English territory via a negotiated peace treaty concluded between England and France after Bacon's Rebellion (1624-1625). After being refused access by both England and France for several years, these French colonists moved upriver towards present day Warwick where they constructed Fort Orange (now Warwick University) which served as their interim whitewashed capital until they relocated permanently inland in 1639 when they founded Kingston Priory on lands now occupied by Providence University campus across Narragansett Bayou from what is now Fort Adams。 This initial Dutch colony lasted until early 17th century when most settlers either abandoned or were driven out by Massachusets Native American groups such as the Pequot people who had acquired land near modern day Portsmouth Naval Base during this time period.. In 1641 then Governor Sir George Yeo issued a royal charter giving full rights unto "the towne called Newport" including freedom from Massachuset taxes; this charter has been cited as one contributing factor leading to its subsequent growth throughout colonial times.. In 1646–47 negotiations took place between King Philip II of Spain (ruled Netherlands) and Cromwellian England resulting in recognition of Rhode Island colonies within English Crown jurisdiction free from massachusetts selective taxation laws set forth specifically against those colonies by Parliamentarian lawmakers.. This event helped spur economic development withinRhode ISLAND during Colonial times culminating with establishment of new prospering commercial areas such as Newport beachline
