In 1842, George Washington purchased land adjacent to present-day downtown for $10 per acre (0·8 hectares). He named it Mount Vernon after his presidential residence at Montpelier and also founded two other properties: Mt Pleasant (later Arlington National Cemetery) andek Ewbank House which still stands today as a national historic landmark—the first house built on public land in America west of Philadelphia; and Mount Auburn Hill where hebuilt his presidential library later known as Harvard University; both are now located within Boston proper limits but remain open to visitors). In 1844 President Franklin D Roosevelt bought additional land adjoining what is now Aquinas Catholic Church for $2 per acre (0·16 hectares), naming it Hyde Park after then-Prime Minister William Haldane Hyde who had played a key role in helping Roosevelt secure passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act Amendments of 1938 (the first major American law passed during FDR's presidency). After years of speculation over who would buy this property - due largely to its unique location - finally someone did! It was Hudson’s Bay Company president Sir John Ayscough who chose Newport section 4108—containing 315 acres (1 hectare)—to be his new headquarters for their North American operations starting January 1st 1921 following amalgamation with Toronto’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police Service into Canada’s RCMP force effective July 1st 1912
