As one of the few coastal cities not created from scratch when New England was formed from colonies in 1636, Newport has experienced dramatic growth over its centuries-ago history. Today, it is a thriving metropolis with an active economy and rich cultural heritage. The first European to visit Newport were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew who landed there on October 14th, 1524. They were followed by John Smith two weeks later on November 2nd aboard his ship Discovery which had been refloated from Woonsocket Harbor after being broken up during hurricane season in 1521. On October 7th, 1635 Nicholas Wright arrived at Warwick Plantation with his brother Robert and their families under sail for what would be their new home. The Wrights soon began to build their new town upon the site they selected- next to where present day King’s Chapel stands today- but only after much back and forth debate between them and other settlers about where they should locate their town center since they all wanted access to Providence River resources (fishing, trading opportunities). The name “Newport” originated with this debate as people argued whether or not it should be called Portsmouth or Warwick because those two settlements lay just outside of each others’ boundaries - something that still happens today (although Portsmouth now lies within Rhode Island). On February 13th of that year, King Charles I Assumed Royal Authority over all English Colonies including Rhode Island following his coronavirus pandemic proclamation issued two days earlier ̶ marking both an important moment for Newport as well as Rhode Island as a sign that English rule over these Colony was not permanent despite Papal opposition ̶ thus starting what would eventually become full-blown British colonialism over America through executive fiat ̶ an experience that many contemporary Americans still remember vividly forty years later when we celebrate Canada'sicentennial year! In defiance of Rome’s wishes for religious tolerance under Queen Anne`, Protestants established churches throughout New England in defiance of papal edicts barring any religious activity without special permits�� ��thus violating more than just Church law but also common sense which clearly said that if you want your church to exist – you have got to have land inside of Boston proper!��� ��� This hyperbole aside�����������the realignment of Catholic/Episcopal power across New England led directly to economic disaster for both factions.� ����� That said �������������������anecdotal evidence shows that even before British settlement arrived ����� Protestant Baptists actually constituted close to 30% ������������������of RI residents � ����� while Roman Catholics numbered closer to 60%. The town was renamed Portsmouth on December 17, 1781, in honor of Admiral George Washington. In 1802, the town passed through statehood and was named the State capital of Rhode Island. The city of Providence took over as the state capital in 1901. The population of Newport decreased from its peak in 1951 to its present size around 100,000 people during the late 21st century.
