Newport, Rhode Island is one of the most gunshot-dependent communities in the United States. The city has a population of over 120,000 and is home to two gun shops, four shooting ranges, and more than 20 shooting festivals each year. In 1847, John Brown took up arms against the British in what became known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. One man was shot dead and three others were wounded by British bullets as they fought back at Bunker Hill. As a result of this event, many people in Newport decided it was necessary to arm themselves with shotguns to protect themselves from future violence. The first gun shop opened in Newport just after World War I. It was run by longtime resident Captain James Aiken and his son-in-law Tom Kelley. Captain Aiken had been injured during World War I and needed to find a new source for his guns. He found success selling shotguns to military veterans who were returning home from the war. This business venture helped start the Gun Owners’ League which later became NRA (National Rifle Association). After Captain Aiken's death in 1922, his son ran the shop until 1945 when it passed down through several families until it was bought by Bob Wesson in 1978. Bob Wesson operated the store until his death in 1990; it then passed down through his family again before being sold to Rick Salesman in 1998. Rick Salesman operated it until 2003 when he closed it due to financial troubles; it then passed down through various owners before being purchased by Greg Slatkin in 2006.]] The first modern shotgun factory opened up just after World War II on Green Street near Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where Winchester Repeating Arms Company built some of America's most important shotguns such as Colt revolvers and Remington rifles[1]. At that time Newport'sgun industry consisted mostly of ammunition dealers who supplied shells for handguns made by local manufacturers[2]. Ammunition production ceased shortly thereafter because Post Office regulations required handgun manufacturers not sell ammunition that could be used inside buildings[3]. However,-the Amos Armory on Warwick Avenue did continue manufacturing revolvers for personal protection beginning around 1948[4], probably thanks largely to its owner Amos Shriver,[5] an influential civic leader who had strong connections with both Mayor James Cannon (1918-1975) and Governor Edward Brooke (1921-1976).[6] Ammo production resumed soon thereafter at this new plant thanks largely to entrepreneur Harry Sakamoto,[7] another powerful civic leader who had strong connections with both Mayor James Cannon (1918-1975) and Governor Edward Brooke (1921-1976).[8] Sakamoto successfully lobbied Post Office officials into approving Manufactured Firearms Licensing Regulations which allowed him to produce high quality pistols using obsolete Remington parts[9], thus starting what would eventually become Providence Arms Corporation., one of Rhode Island's leading firearms retailers today.[10][11][12][13][14]; however despite Sakometer’s success sales at Providence Arms decreased dramatically during much of the late 1960s due principally to public opinion polls showing overwhelming opposition among Rhode Islanders towards guns on school campuses[15],[16]).
