It is part of the Providence- Warwick- Newport Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1636 by English colonists as New Netherland and became a U.S. territory in 1776. In 1837 it became an incorporated town under Rhode Island General Assembly Act No. 6 (charter), with a population of 7,818 residents at the time of its incorporation and 9,746 as of 2010. The name derives from "Newport" in England which was given to them by King George III when they first arrived there in 1636. The economy of Newport is based largely on fishing and tourism; its exports include lobster, crabs, squid and lobster tails. The original inhabitants were Dutch who also operated breweries and stores in the area until about 1800 when English people began to arrive to take advantage of new land opportunities around Narragansett Bayou and other waterways that had been opened up by Spain during their colonization process in North America. As this happened most families who came to live here were Huguenots who had fled France during the French Revolution (1789- 1795). As early as 1814 Newport's post office reported receiving shipments from Liverpool containing "strings or clamshells full of oysters". By 1840 some twenty thousand pounds worth of clams per year were being exported from Newport alone! In 1860 Reverend John Fenton established what would become one of Rhode Island's leading schools - Fenton Academy - now known as Brown University. In 1865 he published his book “Dictionary Of American Biography” which included information on many notable Rhode Islanders including Rev Dr John Fenton himself! During World War II much activity took place at nearby Pawtucket Naval Shipyard where hundreds men worked on building submarines for both naval forces ashore and afloat throughout Europe while also providing essential supplies for Navy ships afloat...the shipyards closed after Pearl Harbor but continued operations briefly before closing permanently due to lack of orders following V-E Day...Many men lost their lives working here including future Mayor David Gilmore! Today Newport has regained some much needed economic vitality thanks to initiatives such as comprehensive planning that have helped create jobs all overRhode Island while preserving its unique character
