However, during the American Revolution (1775-1783), Newport sided with Great Britain over America and was destroyed by colonial forces during what is known as the Siege of Newport ( September 5-October 15th). This event marked the beginning of what would be known as maritime piracy against American merchant ships which continued until 1815 when hostilities ended with British recognition of American independence. In 1868, while still an independent city, Newport annexed portions of neighboring Warwick which made it one municipality within Providence proper; this annexation created municipal services including police and fire departments shared among all three municipalities without duplication or additional cost to either side involved. In 1903, following incorporation into Providence as one large city – again without duplicate services being provided – New Orleans-born Mayor George Browne initiated what is considered Rhode Island's first municipally run school system which eventually became nationally recognized both within Rhode Islanders themselves and beyond due to its innovative approach including use voucher programs that have helped allow hundreds thousand students from low-income backgrounds to attend high schools across RI each year since 2004! Newport, Rhode Island is a town in the U.S. state of Rhode Island and part of the Providence metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 494, up from 439 at the 2000 census. Newport is one of two towns in Rhode Island that are not included in the Providence-Woonsocket Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The other town is Warwick. Newport was founded by Roger Williams in 1636 as a fishing village on Narragansett Bay near modern day Portsmouth. In 1644, he purchased land to the east of present day Newport and founded what became known as Warwick. The original name for Newport may have been "Pickering" because Englishman Sir William Pickering had built a house there in 1637-38. The first permanent settler in Newport was Nicholas Hill who arrived with his family in 1701 and established himself alongside Samuel Morse on Monmouth Street just north of present day State House Square. Hill's home still stands today across from Monument Avenue adjacent to Huntington Library & Museum
