The Newport, Rhode Island gun industry has a long and colorful history. The first firearms manufactured in the city were pistols and rifles made by Englishman George Mason in 1794. The following year, Americans founded the Providence Gun Company, which manufactured handguns and shotguns. In 1814, the company merged with Danbury Arms Manufacturing Company to form Danbury-Providence Rifle & Pistol Company.Danbury-Providence Rifle & Pistol Company produced cannons for the American Revolution as well as civilian firearms for civilians throughout Rhode Island until it ceased operations in 1865. In 1881, two years after guns began being manufactured in Newport, a company was started called the Newport Armory Design Co., Incorporated to produce shotguns and revolvers using handcrafted parts from local suppliers. This company continued production until 1907 when it became part of Colt Firearms Corporation. Colt Firearms Corporation produced handguns until 1949 when it was sold to United Auto Workers Union Local 503 of Cleveland, Ohio who converted it into a rifle factory known as “The Browning Arms Factory” whichfunctioned until 1971 when it became White Sands Ammunition Plant #1 under management of Citizens Defense Protective Association (CDPA) while also manufacturing ammunition for military use at that plant

The Newport Rifle and Pistol Club began meeting in 1882. The club was organized to promote handgun shooting in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1890 the club became the Newport Rifles and Pistol Association. In 1912 the NRA was founded in Newport.
Newport, Rhode Island is a city located on the bay of Newport, Rhode Island in southeastern Rhode Island. As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,362. The history of Newport dates back to 1636 when a group of English colonists landed on what is now known as Newport County and began trading with the local Native Americans. The first permanent structure in what is now Newport was built by Col. John Smith in 1712 and it served as the summer home of General George Washington during his military campaigns against British forces in America during the Revolutionary War. In 1834, Portsmouth native Caleb J. Green purchased land at Point Judith and erected a wooden warehouse which became one of the most important commercial centers on Narragansett Bay. In 1853, Green sold his holdings to developer Samuel Morse for $2 million dollars making Newport one of the wealthiest cities in America. In 1962, Mayor Edward Iselin dedicated an armory complex containing more than 20 buildings used for training United States Navy sailors and Marines. The armory Complex also includes a museum that displays naval artifacts from throughout history including USS Constitution (the first U.S warship), USS Perry (the first American submarine), HMS Belfast (one of Britain's largest warships) and more Today, Newport is known for its vibrant arts scene which has produced some famous artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Lee; its excellent seafood restaurants; its beautiful beaches; its nightlife; and its rich maritime heritage

Newport, Rhode Island is a town in southwestern Rhode Island, located on the Narragansett Bay. The population was 20,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of Providence metropolitan area. Newport was first settled by English colonists in 1635 and became a city in 1795. The town's name comes from its location on the tidal River "Newport" which flowed through the region before being diverted east to Warwick and then south to modern-day Providence. In 1868, an act of Congress changed Newport's name to Portsmouth after Rear Admiral George Dewey who had served as Commodore of the U.S Navy's Rhode Island Squadron during the American Revolution. Portsmouth was incorporated as a city in 1898, becoming one of America's oldest cities with a corporate charter dating back to that year. The city featured prominently in two famous naval engagements: Battle of Bunker Hill and Battle of sea Lion Heights where it played an important role as both military objective and naval port for British warships operating out of Portsmouth during both conflicts. As America gradually shifted towards democracy following World War II, Portsmouth experienced rapid growth thanks to new industrial development along with strong bipartisan support for civic planning which has led to some significant enhancements such as zoning controls that have preserved many architectural treasures dating back centuries like Harbour House (a Morrisania mansion) and Fort Adams State Park while also creating new neighborhoods like Queen Anne’s Wharf/Downtown which retains much nineteenth century architecture while accommodating today’s high density housing values In 1990, Portsmouth was designated as one of fifty communities nationwide selected for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places because of its significant architecture, local history and cultural resources dating back centuries
