In 1636, the area now known as Newport was part of the Lenape Native American tribe. The English settlers who arrived in 1638 were led by Sir Edmund Andros, who developed a small village on the tidal estuary of the Rhode Island River. In 1641, Andros invited several Royal Society members to visit his new settlement and observe its natural resources. These visitors included Christopher Wren, Josiah Wedgwood, and James Hutton. After some months of exploration, Andros decided to name his new settlement Newport because it resembled Haven in England. The first permanent English settler in Newport was John Ruggles, who arrived in 1644. Ruggles recruited several workers from London to help him build a wharf and dockyard on the riverbank. He also explored nearby areas and named them Isles of Shoals after two local islands that he saw while sailing along the coast. By 1648, Newport had become an important trading center due to its location at the mouth of the Rhode Island River and its access to shipping lanes. Newport's growth slowed after King Charles II granted land grants throughout England to various aristocrats in 1703. However, business continued to grow when sea trade became more reliable thanks to improved transportation methods such as canals and docks built by British entrepreneurs such as Thomas Paine. In 1801,King George I granted royal charter for a new university in Newport called Brown University which would later become one of America's most well-known universities
