East Providence, Rhode Island is a small town in theProvidence metropolitan area and was settled in 1636 by English colonists. The town was chartered as a borough on May 10, 1778. It became the capital of Rhode Island on December 12, 1791. In 1854 it became the seat of government for Providence and its adjoined towns. East Providence has a population of about 3300 people. The primary economic sectors are service businesses and manufacturing. It contains many Historic sites including: The old Dutch Reformed Church at Main Street and Meeting House Road is one of the oldest buildings in East Providence and dates back to 1641 when it was part of the Middletown Plantation purchased by John Winthrop from Simon Teunis. The present church building was built between 1814-1816 by Revd Dr George Higginson, who also served as pastor from 1800-1806. The first school in East Providence was built in 1798 by Revd Peter Dailey, who served as Superintendent until 1811 when he moved across the river to Warwick with his family. In that year, West Warwick High School opened which soon outgrew Dailey's facility so construction began on what would become East Providence's first public high school which opened its doors on October 15th, 1814 under the name "Majestic" Schoolhouse. A new wing was added to this structure in 1902 named after Mrs Maria Latta (a daughter of Adam Latta) which housed both female students and an art studio/gallery situated within view of both parent wings while also accommodating up to seventy students for classes during term hours only! In September 1944 during World War II Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in mass destruction throughout Pawtucket County with over seventy percent of structures destroyed or damaged beyond all restoration efforts! One unique aspect found at somebombed residences located near downtown Pawtucket were postcards sent home from those living there documenting their experiences during that time! These cards often depicted scenes such as firefighters fighting fires or soldiers marching off to war; however not all postcards featured photos because many residents chose not to send material away during wartime due to fear pickpockets might steal it! Many other historical sites can be found throughout downtown East Providence such as: 1) Isaac Hill Mansion - This mansion once served as an official residence for Governors General Asbury Park (New York), Newport (Rhode Island), Charleston (South Carolina), Boston ( Massachusetts) & Hartford Connecticut; 2) Merchants Exchange Building - This building served as a business center for local merchants starting in 1799; 3) King’s Chapel - Completed circa 1830 this chapel contained both services performed here each week Sabbath morning & evening by various ministers prior to state coronavirus diagnosis announced Saturday night; 4) First Baptist Church - Built c 1840 this brick church is considered one of earliest Gothic Revival styled churches in America; 5) Riverside Methodist Episcopal Church – Opened 1912 this brick church has been called “the original Cathedral Basilica” dueits resemblance thereto having been copied from Rome’s basilica
