East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in the United States. The population was 17,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence-Woonsocket, RI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is located on Narragansett Bay and includes both the beachside villages of Warwick and Tiverton as well as several small towns inland including North Kingstown and Cranston. The name "East Providence" was given to the town by General Edward New England in 1737 when he divided what was then known as Narragansetts County into two parts: East Providence (now Warwick) and West Warwick. At that time, much of what is now East Providence was still part of Pawtucket Colony. In 1836, following the creation of Rhode Island as a state, East Providence became its capital and remained so for most of its history until Woonsocket took over that role in 1907. In 1868–69 Governor Jonathan Edwards built a new State House in honor of King George IV which still stands today on Pleasant Hill Road near present day downtown Woonsocket. The first post office opened in East Providence on October 12, 1800; it closed on July 14, 1801 due to US War with France (the Battle of Lexington). The first store opened there on December 4th, 1800 by James Brownell who offered goods at his houseboat called "Providence". The first schoolmistress was Sarah Rogers who taught lessons from her home until March 3rd 1802 when she moved into an old brick schoolhouse next door to John Pritchard's house at 5 Broad Street which served as both schools until 1850 when they were combined into one building under Mrs Rogers' ownership known as "Queen's School". Mrs Rogers also built a large addition to this structure which functioned as a grocery store from around 1830 until it burned down in 1865; despite this fire damage it continued to be used for school purposes until 1870 when it reverted back to use as an addition to Queen's School once more. “Providence” originally meant “shoreline village” but soon changed its meaning because many people from nearby Warwick had started living there after moving away from their homes during King George II’s Rebellion (1785-1788). This trend continued through King George III’s reign because many people who wanted to move away from Patriotism associated with Great Britain decided that Rhode Island would be their best place to do so since Plymouth Plantation had been destroyed during the war (see History lesson #3). After years of being surrounded by land owned by other families or individuals – primarily those within Patriotist groups – residents voted unanimously in 1792 not only for incorporation into Rhode Island but also for naming their new town after General Edward New England who had helped them gain independence from British rule! East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 28,526 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous community in Providence County after Warwick. The first European to visit what is now East Providence was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Nantucket after his native island of Nantes, France. In 1636 John Winthrop became the first Englishman to set foot on the mainland since Plymouth Colony's departure from England in 1492. He founded a small trading post here and called it New Haven for short before naming the town after himself and his wife Elizabeth (1630-1705). In 1786 East Providence became part of the new Colony of Rhode Island and Colonies under British sovereignty. The following year its trustees organized an academy which educated black children until 1827 when that institution was closed by order of Governor Nicholas Miller due to complaints from white settlers about how well black children were doing academically despite having slightly lower average intelligence than whites. From its earliest days as a settlement, trade played an important role in East Providence's economy. Manufacturing began with tanning skins and other leather products (the early residents did not have any animal husbandry) and grew into lace manufacture, grist milling, brewing and distilling during the 19th century; however fishing continued to be one of town's primary sources of income until World War II when refrigeration made seafood more affordable for Americans across many cultures around the world through frozen food production . Today there are few major manufacturing or service businesses remaining within Eastern Providences borders but agriculture continues to play a significant role with several thousand acres (1 hectare) devoted to growing crops such as fruits, vegetables, corn/maize etc., while also making extensive use of greenhouses for growing plants during colder months; this has helped keep some jobs localized while still providing muchneeded economic activity throughout both summer and fall months
The town of East Providence was founded in 1636 by the Pilgrims. It became a part of Rhode Island in 1781. In 1837, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in the town, and it began to grow rapidly. The population reached 9,000 by 1860, and 15,000 by 1970. The city of Providence annexed East Providence in 1907.
