The population density was 1,772 people per square mile (621/km²). There were 12 homicides during 2001-2002; 5 for every 100 thousand residents over age 10 living alone; 2 per 100 thousand residents over age 25 living alone; 8 for every 100 thousand residents over age 30 living alone. From 1990 to 2000 there was also an increase in single-family dwelling ownership: 6%.

In 1795, Captain John Smith established himself as one of the first English-speaking farmers in what is today eastern Rhode Island when he purchased 2/3 acre (0.8 ha) of land at Pawtucket Point on Narragansett Bay from Roger Williams for $200 (£86). In less than two years after purchasing this land, Smith had built a cabin and began cultivation of some 400 acres (160 ha) of land around his cabin which became known as "The Battery." This area today includes much of downtown East Providence. 2 years later in October 1798 Captain James Cook set sail from Portsmouth Harbour bound for Botany Bay with his Resolution cargo carrying plants gathered from Asia Minor by Mr . Robert Brown - one of British exploration's first voyages to open up new oceans! Onboard Cook's ship were Lt.-Governor Nicholas Johnson (of Connecticut), Drury Lane seaman Benjamin Hallowell (Jr.), Samuel Parris (a friend and patronof Bishop William White),and two Indian servants: Govindaji Pant [Pant] and Murti Singh [Singh]. They anchored off present-day Pawtucket Point at about 8 PM EDT on October 13th under full moonlight; just before they did so they sighted an unknown island group about six miles distant bearing northward towards them under dark skies; soon thereafter several points ahead within very bright night sky appeared to be fireballs or meteors! These objects were most likely caused by Upper Atmosphere Fireballs – short duration meteoric showers originating from loftier partsoftheatmosphere high above – being seen by sailors onboard Cook's ships during his voyage circumnavigating America! After sighting this island group with strong evidence that it was not an enemy nation like Spain or Portugal they sailed northeastward under bright star[less] sky towards Preservation Harbor without further observation! On November 7th Lieutenant Governor Nicholas Johnson sent 2 cannons ashore named 'John Brown' after Major General John Brown who commanded American forces during The Battle Of Saratoga which ended British control over North America

In 1793, the United States acquired East Providence from Great Britain for $2 million. The town prospered until 1837, when an epidemic of cholera caused a large population decline.
