In 1831, Rifle stocks were produced by Alderney & Sons at the Quaker City Arsenal. This company became known as Alderney & Stockbridge after Abraham Alderney purchased their business in 1841. In 1861, Rifle stocks were made by Hargrave Bros., one of two companies that produced riflestocks for the Union Army during the American Civil War. After defeat at Gettysburg, Union forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865. East Providence is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 21,342 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous incorporated town in Rhode Island after Warwick. The easternmost part of the modern-day town was settled by English colonists in 1636 and it became a separate parish in 1705. East Providence began to grow rapidly as a result of its strategic location on Narragansett Bay and its close proximity to New England trade and industry. By 1810, the town had reached its current size with 10 stores, 30 households and 100 acres (40 hectares) of land. In 1820, East Providence formed part of the newly createdProvidence County, which grew rapidly due to the export industries that sprang up around this time such as shipbuilding and fishing. However, by 1830, cotton production had effectively replaced these traditional trades as Providence's mainstay economy. The late 1800s were not kind to East Providence as factories closed down or were moved away from the area; instead they became residential areas for mill workers and their families who continued to rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. However, during World War II many businesses reopened including several breweries that aided in helping support local manufacturing efforts; this helped contribute greatly to post-war growth in East Providence. After years of decline following the turn of the century there has been steady growth over recent decades culminating in present day levels which are still above those seen during much earlier times thanks largely to increased commuting opportunities within mainland Massachusetts and Rhode Island as well as strong incentives from both state government and private entities alike for development along one key corridor downtownward extending all the way across Narragansett Bay

East Providence was once a thriving and prosperous town in Rhode Island. It is now a small, rural community with few if any remaining businesses or inhabited homes. The town was founded by the Pilgrims in 1636 as part of the new covenant between England and the native people of Rhode Island. For many years, East Providence flourished as a farming and fishing village, but its fortunes changed when it became the site of one of America's first oil refineries. After World War II, East Providence declined further as its population slowly dwindled to fewer than 100 residents. However, over the past decade or so, there has been a rebirth of interest in East Providence's history and culture. New residents have begun to visit the town for its unique architecture and history, while previous residents have started to return to help make sure that their former home maintains itsewitnesship status. East Providence began life as an agricultural village on Narragansett Bay. In 1636, English settlers arrived in what is now Rhode Island and established themselves along the mainland. One of these early settlers was John Winthrop who purchased land in present-day East Providence from several Dutch traders for £4 per acre (about $102 per square mile). Winthrop built his house on this land which he named "Providence" after his patron saint; however, because most of present-day Eastern Providence lay within Narragansett Bay at that time, little evidence remains to support this claim. In 1638–39, Revaert van der Lyck moved from Holland's North American colony of New Netherland to begin trading with local natives in what is now Rhode Island. Van der Lyck purchases some land north of today's old city limits which he named "Narentown". From here he conducted successful trade negotiations with both local Indians and English colonists until his death in 1644 at age 58 years old; thus becoming one of only two Dutchmen everto establish permanent residency within what is now Rhode Island (the other being Hendrick Hudson). During van der Lyck's lifetime there were about 50 Dutch traders living throughout what is now Connecticut River Valley; however only six located at Narentown before van derLyck’s death: Dirck Jacobszoon de Graaf (1640–1702), Jan Baptist Verstreken (1641–1715), Willem Zuylenburgh (1645–1706), Abraham Copley(1647–1722), Nicholas Roggeveen(1649–1712)and Casparus Whitman(1651/2 – 1720). A number of factors contributed to van derLycks' success including his strong business acumen combined with entrepreneurial spirit; moreover he had instilled into his Native American dealers some principles which would later be adopted by British colonizers during their own periodical efforts towards Indian assimilation: 1) To maximize profits rather than sell goods at excessive prices 2) To promote friendly relations instead thereof 3) To provide goods unavailable through traditional means 4) To prevent violence
