East Providence, Rhode Island is a small town located on the eastern edge of Providence County. The population was 16,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pawtucket- Center Point, RI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what would become East Providence arrived in 1638 and named it Monmouth after the Monmouth County, New Jersey county where they originated. They were led by Captain John Smith and his group of Englishmen who had landed on Narragansett Bay in 1636 while seeking passage to China. The first Europeans to live permanently in what would become East Providence were Increase Mather and his family, who arrived in 1737. Mather became one of the most influential men in early Rhode Island because he helped found both Providence College (now Brown University) and Congregational Church (now First Baptist). In 1812, as part of General Anthony Wayne's invasion of Canada, President James K. Polk took up arms against Great Britain near present-day Warwick; however, when peace was restored two months later, East Providence's residents chose not to fight for their countrymen instead focusing on electing their own local officials such as Representative John Atherton and Sheriff Joseph Squires. Aftermath of the war left many businesses and homes destroyed by British bombardment during the winter of 1813-14; however these events did little to dent East Providence's reputation as an active community that respected its obligations under English law. In 1898 former Mayor Wm Husted founded a business bureau which still functions today known as The Wm Husted Corporation Limited which manufactures building supplies including plumbing fittings and home improvement products beneath its name across several stores throughout Rhode Island including one within walking distance from The Ritz Carlton Hotel adjacent to Interstate 95 southbound exit on King Street in Pawtucket City; this store is also open Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm EST

The town of East Providence, Rhode Island is located in the southeastern part of thestate and lies on the south bank of Narragansett Bay. The town was founded by Captain John Smith in 1636 as a trading post on what is now known as Smiths Neck. In 1786, the town became part of Providence when that city was created from parts of two other towns, Warwick and Cranston. The population of East Providence reached a peak in 1927 with over 21,000 people living there. However, since then the population has slowly declined due to various factors such as economic decline and immigration. In 1834, President Andrew Johnson ordered all U.S. troops out of Rhode Island because he felt that the state was being used by England to subvert American policy. This led to an economic crisis for East Providence which caused many residents to leave for political reasons or simply unable to afford to live there anymore. As a result, the population size decreased even further and it wasn’t until 1990 that it regained its previous level before decreasing again in 2000 due to a combination of economic problems and natural disasters such as Hurricane Floyd
The area now known as East Providence was first settled by the Wabanaki people in the early 1600s. The town was founded by Captain John Smith in 1636, and quickly became a major economic center on the Narragansett Bay. In 1732, Rhode Island passed its first Statute of Liberty, which helped spur development in the town. In 1837, East Providence became a part of Massachusetts after Buzzard's Bay was ceded to that state. However, trade and commerce continued to be important throughout most of Rhode Island's history, making it one of the most prosperous communities in New England.
