East Providence is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence– Warwick metropolitan area. East Providence is bordered by Cranston to the north, Bristol to the east and south, Warwick to the west and Narragansett Bay to the northwest. The Connecticut River forms much of its eastern border and forms much of its southern boundary. The towns of Coventry, North Kingstown and West Warwick are also located in this vicinity. The first European settlement in what is now East Providence was made on December 12, 1638 when Captain John Smith sent two men ashore from his ship "Nova Scotia" to explore a new landmass which he named New England after himself and his brother-in-law Arthur Conan Doyle. After exploring for about a week they returned home with news that there were no native people living in this region but rather Native Americans who called themselves Wampum People. In 1641 Englishman Nicholas Stone built a small fort on what is now Portsmouth Square within present day East Providence limits where he stored goods for trade with Indians during King Philip's War (1644-46). Fort Stone was abandoned after Indian attacks began in earnest around 1648; however it later became known as Stone's Hill due to its location near present day Stone's Point State Park on Narragansett Bayou just beyond an old stone lighthouse dating back to 1724 which still stands today as one of only two surviving wooden structures in Rhode Island designed by Samuel Mudge while he was Principal Architect for docks & wharves at Newport News Shipbuilding Company between 1877-1885-. In 1651 Englishman Nicholas de la Rue purchased 120 acres (49 hectares) northeast of present day Portsmouth Square from Indian Chief Samson Leach alias Moses Purchase for £1 per acre Purchased land included marshy ground which had been drained by Captain George Weymouth several years earlier following joint efforts between variousRhode Islanders including Councilor William Stratton along with some members of Parliament under sponsorship from Parliamentary Speaker Robert Walpole who financed infrastructure development including roads, canals and drains etc.. La Rue renamed his purchase site "Newtown" then developed it into what we see today with about 40 buildings built over time primarily used for agricultural purposes such as housing stock or grist mills until quite recently when most have been torn down or converted into apartments/condos/hotels etc.. La Rue died without issue circa 1700 leaving behind 350 acres (160 hectares) including present day Newtown square parcel which became part of East Providence Township formed April 3rd 1781... East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence–South Kingstown–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. East Providence is also home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. The first permanent settler in what is now East Providence was Nicholas Cozens, who arrived on July 24, 1636. He named his new land "Providence". In 1638, Roger Sherman donated 4 acres (1 km²) of land to the town for building a churches and other public buildings. In 1639, John Waterman donated 2 more acres (0.8 km²). The town began to prosper from these donations and soon had a schoolhouse and storehouses built as well as two Baptist churches - both were dedicated in 1646. In 1660s-1670s most of present-day East Providence was destroyed by fire except for some very small pieces that remain today including Nicholson's house which still stands; it burned down in 1868 while under renovation by architects Aiken and Winkler for Brown University but has since been rebuilt without its original design elements."Formerly known as Nicholas Cozens' Farm", Accessed December 3rd 2017 In 1692/93 Jameson Peake (1644-1712), one of the founders ofBrown University, bought 8½ acres (2 km²) of land between Little River Neck Road and Northumberland Avenue from Nicholas Cozens for $5 per acre ($120 total).
