East Providence is a small town in Rhode Island. It is located just south of the city of Providence and is bordered to the east by Narragansett Bay, to the north by Newport, and to the west by Cranston. The population was 9,463 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now East Providence were traders who came from England in 1636. In 1814, a group of British officers decided that it would be a good place for an arsenal because of its location on Narragansett Bay. This decision led to the town's growth and development. Roosevelt (1933-1945), Congressman John Fenton (1995-2002), and Attorney General Maura Healy (2007-2015). The areas around Downtown are also home to some of RI's most famous landmarks such as Dunkin' Donuts and URI Hospital which are both located near downtown Crossing Street just off Interstate 95 exit 4A
The town of East Providence was first settled in 1636 by the Narragansetts. The town was originally named Providence, but it changed its name to East Providence in 1744 because of the increasing population and commerce in the town. The first house in the town was built by Nicholas Crane in 1768. In 1814, a school was built and started operations. In 1825, a courthouse and jail were built. In 1828, a canal was built through the town and it became an important transportation route for goods from Pawtucket to Eastern Rhode Island. On October 12, 1830, the first free public election took place in East Providence when all residents were allowed to vote without fee. on November 5th, 1830, voters approved forming an incorporated society called "The Congregational Society" with a meeting room at Weymouth Place as its first headquarters. On December 2nd, 1830, President John Quincy Adams delivered his inaugural address in which he announced that "this new nation is founded on principles of democracy".
