East Providence is a small town in Rhode Island. The population was 9,836 at the 2000 census. It is part of Providence County. The town is located on the east bank of the river Narragansett, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Providence and about 24 miles (38 km) west of Hartford. The first Europeans to land in what is now East Providence were Dutch traders in 1637 who named it Anegada after their home island of Amsterdam. English traders followed suit in 1639 and called it New Netherland; this name was shortened to East Providence by early British settlers because they did not want to seem hypocritical with their claim to Holland. East Providence was initially settled by Congregationalists and Puritans who arrived during the Great Awakening period in 17th century America. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington used East ProvidENCE as his headquarters during his march across New England from Valley Forge to Yorktown. In 1812, East PROVIDENCE became a separate incorporated village when its residents voted unanimously to secede from Rhode Island due to dissatisfaction with state government policies that favored slavery over free labor. In 1815, the village celebrated its centennial with an event that included a picnic on Narragansett Bayfront and speeches by then-Governor John Adams and Mayor William Browning. After years of decline, many people moved into new housing developments around 1960 when Interstate 95 bypassed town center; however, some businesses have kept their doors open until recently including Fidelity National Bank which occupied one building on Meeting Street for more than 150 years until it closed down in 2017 . An important milestone for the community came on July 4th, 1959 when local high school students set up an encampment near I-95 just east of Main Street which served as their summer quarters while they finished construction of West Side High School; today that site remains known as "EAST PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL"
