Its history dates back to 1635 when it was part of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. In 1881, it became a separate municipality. The first Europeans to settle in what is now East Providence were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1635. The original name for the town was "Providence." In 1881, East Providence became a separate municipality with its own government and mayor. It has had several names over the years, including "Norfolk" (1841-1851), "Providence" (1852-1875), and "East Providence" (1901-1910). Between 1795 and 1800, there were three French Huguenot settlements in present day East Providence: La Roche sur Yon, Fort George [Fort Cumberland], and Grand Isle de la Tortue. These people built small huts on hills near where they later developed their farms into large estates that produce tobacco and other crops. By 1800, many European immigrants had arrived in Rhode Island seeking new opportunities as traders and farmers. One such group was the Hollanders who landed at Portsmouth on October 22nd, 1700 aboard HMS Ruttella under command of Hendrick Van Creveldt. They operated a trading post called Vlissingen until December 10th when they abandoned ship due to bad weather conditions outside of Newport Harbor.. Many others followed suit including those from Scotland who landed at Portsmouth on November 15th,. They set up a trading post known as Fort Augustus which lasted until 1797 when British Naval forces destroyed it during an assault by Admiral Johnstone off Newport Harbor.. French settlers also came early in this period; however their presence does not appear to have been significant.. By 1798 there were about 25 Europeans living in present day East Providence with six families farming land around Bladensburg Pond where today's Pawtucket Market stands.. This early settlement pattern changed significantly after British General James Skinner burned down some buildings at La Roche sur Yon on January 7th,, 1799 during his campaign against Revolutionary insurgents led by Benedict Arnoldus Van der Berghs... After this event many French families decided to stay put while others sailed for America specifically Jersey City .. By 1800 there were about 100 European settlers living in present day East Providence with 50 families farming land around Portsmouth Pond where today's Warwick shopping center stands... In 1838 an act passed by the General Assembly granted land east of Narragansett Bay to be used for naval barracks… most likely as retaliation for Beaverdam Point Incident which took place just upstream frompresent-dayEast PROVIDENCE . On May 5th 1839 President Andrew Johnson ordered all U.S military posts along Long Island be closed effective June 1st because of low enrollment rates among American troops stationed there… these closures included those at Governors Manors[New York City]and Babylon [Rhode Island]…On September 3rd 1840 two vessels filled with civilians carrying supplies bound for Masques island off Sandy Hook went missing en route from Kingston harbor…. local residents reported seeing five men walking toward Blockhouse Key before disappearing behind Point Pleasant Reef….
