East Providence is a small town in Rhode Island located on the Narragansett Bay. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 Census. East Providence is part of the Providence metropolitan area. It borders Cranston to the south, Warwick to the east, and Bristol to the north. The first people to live in what is now East Providence were fishermen who hunted and gathered seafood from nearby waters. The town was officially founded on July 1, 1781 by General James Clinton and Captain John Brown as a fishing village known as Newport with a population of just 25 people. In 1837, it became an incorporated town when all of Rhode Island became one state. As an incorporated town, East Providence had responsibility for government services such as education, firefighting, and infrastructure development. However, its residents elected only two representatives to the Rhode Island General Assembly – one from each of the eleven towns inRhode Island – instead of being able to vote for one representative per township. This system continued until 1959 when voting rights were granted to towns through the creation of senate districts which provided more representation for rural areas than did original assembly districts. In 1927, Eastern Avenue was opened as an expressway connecting Pawtucket with South Kingstown via Cranston and Warwick; it remains today one of RI's most traveled highways. The opening of Interstate 95 caused many businesses in downtown East Providence closed down including several banks which were relocated out towards I-95 near exits 5 & 6 (the former site of Eastern Ave). As a result, most commercial activity along Main Street between Orange St./Providence Rd., State Rd./Providence Ln., Broad St./Providence Ln., Park Ave./Broad St., and Somerset Ave happened outside Downtown East Providence during this time period while business owners within Downtown conducted their operations out-of-town or through other locales due to lack of available transportation into/out of town during that time period

East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Warwick County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 15,531 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Warwick County. The town was settled by English colonists in 1635 and incorporated as a town on January 1, 1786. The first settler in East Providence was John Pratt who came over with the Mayflower in 1635 and established himself along what is now Main Street. At that time there were only two other towns in Rhode Island: Providence and Narragansett Bay. East Providence grew very quickly due to its advantageous location on the Seekonk River between Narragansett Bay and Providence Harbor making it an ideal place to trade goods with both those islands. In 1786, voters approved incorporation of the new town which became known as "East Providence". Many of the early residents were refugees from war-torn Europe who had come to find a new home after being displaced by religious or political persecution. Many of these immigrants brought with them their skills and knowledge which would later be important for East Providence's growth as a commercial center during the 19th century. During World War II many factories were located in or around East Providence because of its strategic position at the mouth of Narragansett Bay which allowed for easy access to Allied shipping and resources needed for wartime production. After the war many businesses closed down but others took off like Eastern Airlines which still operates out of Elks Corner Airport today

The town was destroyed by a fire in 1737, but it re-emerged as a thriving commercial center. In 1812, East Providence became the capital of Rhode Island. It remained an important cultural and political center until the late 19th century when its importance decreased as New England's industrial centers developed.
