In 1764, during King George's War, Patriot General Edward Cornwallis landed at Pemaquid on Lake Ontario with 1,500 men to establish an American military presence along the coast of New England. Cornwallis intended to junction forces with British army under General Howe and march inland to capture Boston and other strategic points important to British war efforts. However, before he could take any action, Admiral Samuel Graves blocked Cornwallis' path from the north by stopping his ships off Mount Hope Shoals near present-day Warwick. This prevented Cornwallis from marching inland or reaching Boston while leaving open access to Newport News on Chesapeake Bay which would have posed a serious threat to British naval supremacy in southeastern Massachusetts. Cornwallis decided instead to retreat back upriver and try again later in the year when better opportunity would exist. This decision likely saved many lives as it allowed American forces time to assemble and planned their counterattack against Cornwallis’ retreating column which inflicted significant losses upon him at Bunker Hill (April 6–7), Waltham Heights (April 10), Battle of Saratoga (September 13) and Yorktown (October 19). In 1765 Portsmouth entrepreneur Nicholas Young founded a small trading post on what is now Water Street in what is now East Providence for English traders looking for trade opportunities along the Narragansett Bay area after waiting out Royal Navy blockades put into place during King George's War specifically targeting these areas of trade interests rich with coffee beans, tea leaves and other goods coveted by Brits seeking revenge against their enemies during this period known as "The French Wars". At that time Water Street was located about where Parsons Coffee Shop now stands downtown between High Street & Adams Avenue east of I-95 exit 4A/US Route 4E

This position gave her access to various financial resources and helped her play a key role in developing our state's infrastructure.* Over time*, however*,the fortunes of East Providence have begun to decline*. In recent years(*since 2000), crime rates have become increasingly high (*in comparison to other towns*), while property values have plummeted *. Finally*, due partly to these factors (*and also through *hard work* from municipal officials*) efforts are underwayto reverse course *and bring back some much-needed prosperity*to East PROVIDENCE!
