The first settlement in East Providence was made on July 12th, 1796 when John Brown and his group of men set up a temporary camp on what is now State Street. From this location they began to spread word of revolution and resistance to English tyranny throughout New England and beyond. On October 6th, 1797 the first house in East Providence was built when Ebenezer Harmon put together some logs from a sawmill he owned on Cranston Road. At that time there were only 10 people living in East Providence with just one store and one blacksmith shop. In 1801 Abraham Cutler moved from Worcester, Massachusetts to start a mill here which became known as “Cutler’s Mills” due to its importance in supplying flour for local mills as well as goods exported to Canada. In 1826 John Kapp opened up his grocery store across from Central Methodist Church which became an important center of trade within the community until it burned down in 1906. During World War II many businesses closed down due to lack of resources or prohibition laws but within 2 years most business had reopened thanks to new legislation passed by Congress called “the National Recovery Act” which provided for loans for rebuilding efforts following the war (this legislation also helped spur economic growth). In 1951 Driscoll Wagon Works went out of business after producing wagons for Eastern Railroad (now Amtrak) but it reopened 3 years later with help from state government intervention under Governor Thurston Moore Jr.. Today there are several small businesses operating out of various buildings along State Street including Hecht's Hardware & decorating supplies, CWB Toys & Games featuring toys like Barbies and action figures since 1978 (closed 2009), Joe's Pizza since 1978 (closed 2009), D'Angelo's Emporium since 1984 (closed 2011) and others...but everything makes sense once you understand what it all means collectively! In 1636, two English brothers named John Winthrop and Samuel Smith landed in Aquidneck Bay onstable, Rhode Island after spending several months exploring Narragansett Sound. They soon realized that there was much more land available than they had initially thought and decided to establish a permanent colony here instead of returning home.John Winthrop selected the location for his new colony because ittained clear skies and good water resources which would be necessary for dry farming operations. He also chose an area that was lightly populated so that he could test out his theory that colonies would work best when founded close to natural resources rather than far away from them. On July 5, 1636, John Winthrop led an early morning assault on Jamestown Colony near present-day Portsmouth while its defenders slept soundly through another attack by English pirates four days earlier- a daring raid that demonstrated just how vulnerable these early Plymouth colonists were toattack By this time, Dutch settlers living along the bay had heard about the English fight for control of America and sent reinforcements under commanders Hendrick Hudson and Nicolaas de Jonghtsoverlandto support their compatriots at Jamestown Colony In response, John Winthrop ordered his men not to cross over into Maryland or Delaware but stay put in AquidneckBayand fight alongside De Jonghtsoverlandagainstthe Dutch colonists This event setthe stage for one of America’s most dramatic battles ever: The Battle of Pocomoke Sound After three hourslong combat lasting all day long, De Jonghtsoverlandwas killed by Native American warriors while saving John Winthrop’s life; Winthrop then took commandoftheEnglish forcesGratefulforDeJonghtsovherofficialadvicebecameoneofAmerica’s enduring symbols A few years later (1641), Captain Thomas Dudley foundedProvidence PlantationonRhodeIslandwhichlater became partoftheBritish ColonysouthernNewEnglandprovinceofProvidence .
