In 1637, the English East Providence Plantation was founded by Captain John Smith and his wife Pocahontas. The plantation was located on the Providence River in what is now Pawtucket. The first owner of the land was Nicholas Fowles. In 1763, during the American Revolution, the East Providence Plantation became part of the British Empire under King George III. The British government confiscated all of Rhode Island's property during the revolution. After the Revolution, many people from England moved to Rhode Island to start new lives and businesses. Some of these people were Thomas Gage, a soldier who served in America during boths wars; he helped to create Rhode Island as an independent state; and John Adams, one of America's Founding Fathers and one of its first two Vice Presidents. The early 1800s were a time of great change for Rhode Island because industries began expanding rapidly due to new technologies like railroads and canal construction. For many years, Providence had been known as "the financial capital of New England." In 1849, however, Worcester County (then part of Massachusetts) seceded from Rhode Island and became an independent republic called Narragansett County. This event made it difficult for Providence to keep up with growing Massachusetts economy and caused many jobs in downtown Providence to go offshore. During World War II (1939-1945), North Korea invaded South Korea and captured much of that country's infrastructure including bridges, railways, airports etc., so much so that there is only one bridge remaining across the river between those countries that remains operational: PCK Bridge over PCK Stream
