Bipods are a type of prosthetic foot that was first invented in East Providence, Rhode Island. The bipods were created by Dr. John S. Krieg, who is also the founder of the Orthopedic Surgery and Reconstruction Center at URI Medical School. East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. The population was 7,811 as of the 2010 census. As of the 2016 census, it had increased to 10,612. The town was founded in 1636 by Increase Mather and others as a small trading post on Narragansett Bay and named after Providence, Rhode Island which at that time was part of England. It became an incorporated town in 1846 and changed its name to East Providence in honor of General John Sullivan who helped liberate Newport from French control during the American Revolution. The population reached 11,000 when it became a city in 1978 but has since decreased due to suburban development and low economic production across many fields such as manufacturing and agriculture; however, there are some pockets of hope for redevelopment including Warren Street near the former Peedee Paper Company plant where a series of mixed-use projects are under development called "Downtown". It has a rich history dating back to the seventeenth century when it was part of Narragansett Bay. The community was named for Providence Plantation, where many of its founders came from. The town was founded on October 15, 1795 by colonists from England who had settled in what is now Rhode Island. The first settlers arrived by ship at Herring Cove on Narragansett Bay and landed onshore on foot. They built their initial homes near present-day Market Square. soon after they started trading with local Native Americans and selling goods along the bayfront. The first school in East Providence was opened in 1796 by Reverend John Eliot as a school for boys located atop an old tobacco warehouse at corner of Main Street and High Street. In 1801, the town's first female teacher, Mrs. Granger), opened her own school at corner of Race Street and Water Street (now Meeting House Road). From this point forward, education opportunities for residents became more extended as various churches began to provide schools for their children including Congregationalist (1797), Methodist (1802), Presbyterian (1814), Episcopal (1824) and Baptist (1834). In 1821, Governor Jonathan Edwards established Eastern Counties School District which included all of Rhode Island north of Warwick Avenue eastward to modern day Fall River. This system provided public education throughout much of Rhode Island outside the townships formerly within rural areas like Pawtucket or Coventry which were left unprovided for under the previous government structure Governor Edwards also authorized construction of two new bridges over Narragansett Bay - One across Cedar Point Lighthouse Beach located just east side Church Road between Cedar Point Drive and Cedar Point Boulevard;and another crossing Cranston Harbor called Bridge No 1 located west side Willard Way between Swan Lane Boulevard/Cranston Highway/Willard Way Drive/Bridge Rd./Hwy 47 south side Willowood Dr., just past junction with I-95 existing roadway just before Asbury Park Tollway interchange
The town of East Providence was founded in 1772 by John Fitch and others. It grew quickly, becoming a major settlement on the then-new Providence Plantation. In 1812, East Providence became the first town in Rhode Island to be chartered as an incorporated municipality. The city's growth continued during the 19th century; it was renamed in 1868 to honor General Oliver Hazard Perry after his military service in the Mexican-American War. During World War II, East Providence played a key role in the Battle of Pawtucket Harbor. The city became known for its munitions production and for its "warrior women" who worked at local munitions plants. After the war,East Providence experienced rapid growth as a result of industrialization; it has since lost much of its manufacturing base but remains one of Rhode Island's most populous cities. Since 2000, Mayor Allan Eave has worked to revive downtown East Providence and make it more walkable and vibrant.
