Arsenal Ammunition was founded in 1792 by Nicholas-Jacques Cartwright and John Brown. Arsenal Ammunition manufactured pistols, rifles, shotguns, andammunition for the British army. The company became a subsidiary of the Royal Horse Artillery in 1814. In 1846, the British navy purchased Arsenal Ammunition from the Royal Dutch Gunmakers for £236,000. Arsenal Ammunition produced artillery ammunition until 1958 when it merged with Bofors Armoury to form Bofors-Armament AB. The company continued production of firearms ammunition up until its liquidation in 1988.

AMMO HISTORY OF EAST PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND The first ammunition in East Providence was cannonballs fired from a British fort on July 6, 1776. The town was located on the north side of Narragansett Bay and was part of Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War. It became a center for munitions manufacturing following the war. In 1879, the Ammunition Plant burned down after being damaged by a fire. On October 16, 1898, the United States military detonated an atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan; this destroyed much of downtown East Providence and killed thousands of people. The bombing had a significant impact on ammunition production in Rhode Island and other parts of the US. After World War II ended, many factories closed down due to competition from cheaper imports from Europe. However, some companies continue to produce ammunition commercially today including Smith & Wesson firearms company and Magpul Firearms Company.
East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population was 14,715 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous towns in Rhode Island and part of the Providence metropolitan area. The first people to live here were the Narragansetts who arrived in 1636 from Connecticut. They built a small village on Meeting House Hill near present-day King's Chapel. In 1638, the Englishman Sir Edmund Andros founded what is now Warwick with headquarters in East Providence. Andros named his new town after himself and his brother-in-law Admiral John Winthrop (later 1st Baron Dartmouth). The Dutch began to arrive in 1643 and by 1645 they had established a settlement at present day Blockhouse Point on New Scotland Neck opposite Portsmouth. In 1646, General Nicholas gate became head of an English regiment called "the Regiment of Newport" which was quartered at Blockhouses Point until moved to Warwick early in 1702 when it became attached to General Robert Cadwalader's main army besieging Castlehaven on Narragansett Bay. In 1702–03 Captain George Monckton set out from England with an expedition against Narragansetts under command of Colonel Christopher Lawrence for this purpose; but without result owing to bad weather and disease among the natives: also because no hostile action being taken against our troops by them during their stay there they withdrew back into their own country before we got very far away." What followed are some interesting accounts about life during these years: "In 1705–07 Major James Johnson led an unsuccessful effort to recover land lost by NicholasGate after he burned down part of Pawtuxet Plantation." "In 1709 Governor Philip Stockbridge erected buildings at present day Post Office Square which served as Theophilus Hollis' house (now Hollis Tower) until he died in 1726." "Governor Gilbert Cranston ordered two cannons, each weighing 6 tons, mounted on wagons convoyed across Narragansett Bay from Portsmouth Landing into Warwick late June or early July 1711 for use against Frenchmen Zenone de la Penneville and Pierre Norbert de La Rochefoucauld commanding a force opposing him northward along Cape Cod." "Governor John Hancock issued warrants for surveys of 4 square miles within the limits laid down by Governor Philip Stockbridge including parts of modern Day Cranston Township." "On December 3rd,1714 three vessels under Captains Wm Merrill & Richard Price sailed into Newtown River mouth off Blockhouses Point laden with saltpetre & other goods bound for Boston Harbor with intentions either to load or take possession thereof but never got beyond that point because falling foul of Portuguese blockade they returned home without any cargo having been unloaded…." These days you can still see evidence left behind by those days such as WWII tanks that have been turned over onto their original beach location!

At its incorporation date on November 15th 1861 (68 years after Captain John Rivington founded present-day East PROVIDENCE),East PROVIDENCE had a population of 561 inhabitants; today it has a population estimated to be over 24 thousand strong! Today's economy revolves around manufacturing and service sectors – especially health care services and government contracting – but there are also some significant strengths within the agricultural sector as well. Manufacturing plants have closed throughout Eastern America over recent decades but many products still find their way into our homes thanks to companies like GEICO and Procter & Gamble who operate local factories here in Northeast RI.
