In 1828, East Providence incorporated as a town under local control with a population of 2,000 people; it had grown to 5,000 by 1831 when it became one of three towns within Warwick County (the others being Cranston and Pawtucket). During World War II, General Electric constructed two large factories here: one at 360 High Street (now known as GEICO) which manufactured radios and TVs; and another at 1 Park Avenue which produced aircraft parts during 1944-45 through 1945-46 during World War II. After the war ended both plants closed down but reopened as GEICO Place mall locations starting in early 1991 until they closed again around 2003-2004 due to competition from JCPenney - then Macy's - mall locations adjacent to I-95 exit 11A/Hwy 401 W., also known as "The Mall". The former GEICO buildings are currently used for office space by Allied Signal Corporation while 1 Park Ave has been demolished for construction of New England Aquarium located there formerly also apartments useing portions of these buildings including an aquarium museum inside this building housing some old equipment used at both facilities along with new displays about water chemistry In 2006 plans were announced to redevelop both sites into mixed Use/retail/office space with parking available nearby including onsite development from Lennar Development Corporation which own[d] much of neighboring I-95 freeway between exits 11A & Hwy 401 W.. These redevelopment plans have not materialized yet... [and no official announcement has been made since].

Nevertheless, it remains one of Rhode Island's most vibrant towns and is home to some of its most notable residents including Mayor Joshua Sawyer and Congressman José Rivera.
