Cranston, Rhode Island is a town located in the Providence metropolitan area. The town is home to the Cranston Museum of Art and has a rich history dating back to 1781. In that year, General John Sullivan invaded and sacked the town after routing a British military force. The town was rebuilt and became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1825, Cranston's first school was built on Strawberry Street. That same year, Cranston became the capital of Rhode Island. In 1834, Governor George Parris moved the state government from Kingston to Cranston. The town's economy changed when several factories were developed in its central square; these included Winton Manufacturing Company (1914-1968), United States Rubber Company (1920-2003), and Toyota Motor Corporation (1981-present). The current courthouse was built in 1898 and serves as the seat of municipal government for Cranston Township, which includes much of the downtown core of Cranston. The old jail was torn down in 1951 and replaced by a more modern building that still stands today.
